Epitaph is the second album by the technical death metal band Necrophagist , released in 2004.

history

In contrast to the previous album Onset of Putrefication, Epitaph was not recorded single-handedly by Muhammed Suiçmez. For the first time, the band had a permanent line-up, even if almost all of the songs were still written by him. Christian Münzner contacted Suiçmez by phone, who, enthusiastic about his abilities, accepted him into the group. Three months before the recordings, a suitable bass player and drummer were still missing. Münzner remembers an acquaintance named Hannes Grossmann, whom he met at a concert. Grossmann, who had taken long drum lessons in jazz and, like Suiçmez, was very interested in music theory, was accepted as a drummer in the band. He mastered the drums for the songs within two months. The recordings started without a bass player. Grossmann again remembered a colleague, Stefan Fimmers, who filled the bassist's seat. Suiçmez drew his ideas for songs from sometimes unusual sources. So he looked at the construction drawing for a V6 crankshaft with a 72 ° crank angle and discovered that the ignition times follow an interesting rhythm. This created a new drum rhythm around which he built a song. Before the recordings, the members had never rehearsed together, but each individually rehearsed his part. The recordings took place in different studios. Muhammed Suicmez recorded his part in The Depth of Torment in Baden-Baden . Bassist Stefan Fimmers recorded his part in Aexxys-Art in Schwandorf . The recording of the drums and vocals took place under the direction of Christoph Brandes in The Iguana Studios in March . The album was mixed in the same studio by Christoph Brandes and Muhammed Suicmez. The album was mastered by Bob Katz at Digital Domain in Orlando , Florida .

Moritz Krüger states in his review that the band has improved on its previous album, which he also rated as positive. The songs are catchy, but the full potential only opens up after listening to them several times. Above all, he emphasizes the high technical level of playing of the instruments and describes them as "ingenious" and "virtuoso". It awards the full number of ten possible points. Norman from metal.de describes the album as a “milestone in terms of death metal”, describes it as a “masterpiece” and, in addition to the technically high level of play, also emphasizes the lyrics: Suiçmez has “a high level of songwriting qualities”, the lyrics are described by Norman as "sensible". Nine out of ten possible points were awarded. Michael Edele from laut.de stated that it was astonishing that it was a German band, as the music would be more like an American band. He also describes the songs as technically extremely demanding and draws parallels to bands like Morbid Angel , Cynic and Krisiun . Edele is consistently positive about the album, he only criticizes the playing time of around 30 minutes as "tight". It awarded four out of five points, and the album achieved full points in the readers' rating.

style

The use of works from other genres is characteristic of the music on the album. Playing the guitar at the end of Only Ash Remains is a cover version of Sergei Sergejewitsch Prokofiev's song Dance of the Knights from Romeo and Juliet . The song The Stillborn One contains an excerpt from Ludwig van Beethoven's Für Elise . The playing of the bass is compared to that of Steve DiGiorgio . The songs are almost exclusively played fast, with the guitar solos being particularly fast.
