Brujeria (of . Span Brujería , witchcraft ') is a multinational extreme metal - project . It was launched in 1989 by guitarist Dino Cazares and drummer Raymond Herrera (both Fear Factory ). Musicians from other well-known groups such as Napalm Death , At the Gates or Faith No More are and were involved in the project. The members appear with Spanish pseudonyms , the lyrics are also in Spanish. The music is a mixture of grindcore and death metal .
Band history
In 1989 Dino Cazares started the project and gave it the image of a band made up of wanted Mexican drug barons . The first single , entitled ¡Demoniaco! was released in 1990 by Nemesis Records . In addition to guitarist Dino Cazares (“Asecino”), bassist Billy Gould from Faith No More (“Güero Sin Fe”), drummer Pat Hoed (“Fantasma”) and singer John Lepe (“Juan Brujo”) were involved. In 1992 the second single Machetazos followed with Alternative Tentacles . After various line-up changes, the debut album Matando Güeros was released in July 1993 . Along with Billy Gould, Shane Embury from Napalm Death (“Hongo”) played bass, Raymond Herrera (“Greñudo”) recorded the drums and “Pinche Peach” was the second singer. The album featured grindcore with Spanish lyrics and was controversial because of the violent artwork and brutal lyrics. In a contemporary review, the music magazine Rock Hard described the rumors that the band members were Mexican drug traffickers and police murderers as "legend" and wrote that Billy Gould and Dino Cazares were supposed to be behind the project.
In 1994 the single El Pablo followed via Alternative Tentacles , which was opened as a tribute to the Colombian drug trafficker Pablo Escobar . Roadrunner Records released the second album Raza Odiada in 1995 , provoking Subcomandante Marcos in a heroic pose with a portrait of the EZLN leader . The album's intro consists of a spoken word passage in which Jello Biafra satirically attacking the “brown-skinned immigrants ”. Musically, Brujeria turned away from fast grindcore and offered a mixture of Thrash Metal based on the model of Sepultura with influences from the hardcore punk of the Dead Kennedys .
Chupacabra Discos, a sub-label of Billy Gould's label Kool Arrow, released the EP Marijuana in 1997 , the title song was a corruption of the top hit Macarena by Los del Río . A matchbox was included with part of the edition .
Drummer Nick Barker ( Cradle of Filth , Dimmu Borgir ) was involved as a guest musician under the pseudonym "Hongo Jr." on the last studio album, Brujerizmo , released in 2000 . Furthermore, with Gaby Domingez ("Pititis") a singer was involved. Dino Cazares and Raymond Herrera founded the Brujeria offshoot Asesino in 2001 and released the album Corridos de Muerte with the support of Tony Campos (previously with Static-X ) . After the end of Fear Factory, the cast of Brujeria, which in 2003 still consisted of Dino Cazares, John Lepe and Nick Barker, collapsed. In early 2005, Cazares announced that he was leaving the band.
Tony Laureano of Nile ("Angelito") played drums and Jeff Walker ("El Cynico") played bass in the 2007 live performances in South America and the USA . In 2008 the single Debilador was released . Since 2009 the line-up has consisted of the singers John Lepe ("Juan Brujo"), Pat Hoed ("Fantasma") and Gaby Domingez ("Pititis"), the guitarist Shane Embury ("Hongo"), the bassist Jeff Walker ("El Cynico ”) and the drummer Adrian Erlandsson (“ El Podrido ”, formerly At the Gates ).
In 2016 the album Pocho Atzlan was released by Nuclear Blast.
