Drowned is a German death metal band from Berlin .

history

Drowned was founded in 1992. After the release of Conquering the Azure , the band changed singers.

The band has had numerous periods of inactivity and some line-up changes. Most of the time, the core of the respective line-up consisted of two people, for example from 1992 to 1998 the guitarist Tilmann / T1 and the then drummer G. Vermilion and from 2001 to 2009 or during the demo Viscera Terræ made up of Tilmann and drummer Theby, and Since he lived in Hamburg and Tilmann in Berlin, they could only rehearse rarely and eventually separated.

Since 2010 the band has had a stable line-up consisting of T1 as well as T2 and G from the band Essenz. Tilmann has also played bass with Necros Christos under the name Black Shepherd ov Doom . He got out of Necros Christos due to time constraints, after 2012 “after years of stagnation with DROWNED it finally went well again” and “because two bands and a job are simply too many”. In the line-up that has existed since 2010, the debut album Idola Specus was recorded and released in 2014. A tour through Scandinavia is planned for November 2014 and in March 2015 the band plans to tour Central Europe .

style

Frank Stöver from Voices from the Darkside describes the style of the band's early phase as "eerie Death / Black / Doom Metal ". On more recent recordings, Drowned plays traditional death metal. According to Ramon Claassen, the style on Rehearsal's fall 2001 is almost primitive and the quality of the band can hardly be recognized due to the sound quality of the recordings, which Claassen compares with the old Darkthrone recordings. In his review of Viscera Terræ , Stöver compares Drowned with the Grave -Frühwerk and Demigod . The tape doesn't sound like it was recorded the previous year.

Opposite Viscera Terræ , Idola Specus is more direct. Stefan Franke compared the album with Eon from the first Darkthrone album Soulside Journey and the Paradise Lost early work. Björn Springorum from Metal Hammer describes the style of Drowned as a “ nihilistic and morbid mixture” of “death, devil and ruin”, free from “any trends and hype”, against baseball caps and shorts. Idola Specus is "Death Metal of the very old school: dark, life-denying and booming, mixed with the severity of Doom and lots of putrefactive stench". Death Metal is "not played, it is lived, celebrated, as a tribute to the Grim Reaper himself, rigorously and scraped down with a lot of crypt breath. A little Ophis , a little old Obituary , a breath of death Triptykon and a subtle bow in the direction of Morgoth are mentioned as rough clues of this lightless world of negativity. Wonderfully mangy produced, puked out with fervor and decently produced despite all outsider status: this is how you convincingly refine your cult status. "According to Sebastian Schilling from Rock Hard , the band plays Death Metal on Idola Specus , which is comparable to the music of Incantation , which is what "Subliminally threatening riffing " and "doomy passages" are caused. Some riffs could also have come from Necros Christos and ex-Drowned member Mors Dalos Ra. In another issue, Schilling describes the debut as a further "contribution to a genre that produces one highlight after another with long-lost vitality". The title of the publication, Idola Specus , goes back to Francis Bacon and “stands for darkness, the unrecognizability and shadowiness of this world, for external and internal disorientation. Everyone is an abyss. ”In the rock-hard interview with Sebastian Schilling, the guitarist Tilmann stated that he does not want to anticipate the listener's interpretation of the lyrics, as everyone should interpret the songs for themselves. However, the texts are important to him. From the band's old releases he was only really convinced of Viscera Terræ , the rest were just phases of the band's development that the band no longer represented today. While Schilling thought the riffs were reminiscent of Tilmann's former band Necros Christos, Tilmann found that Drowned is more convoluted, there are more tempo changes and the rhythms are different. According to Schilling, the band on Ærth experimented with clear vocals that are reminiscent of Thomas Gabriel Fischer . Tilmann replied that on Conquering the Azure they had experimented with vocals that sounded like Carl McCoy , but had been contributed by another singer.
