Hierophant

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The high priest in the temple of Demeter in Eleusis was called Hierophant (Greek), "revelator of the sacred secrets" . His dignity was hereditary in the family of the Eumolpos , the legendary founder of the Eleusinian Mysteries . Like the Pontifex Maximus in Rome, the Hierophant was the first priest in Attica , and only after conscientious administration of the lower priesthood could one attain the office of the same, which required an impeccable and chaste way of life and was lifelong in Eleusis. It was the responsibility of the hierophant to show the initiated the mysterious sanctuaries and to interpret them (hence the name); at the celebration of Eleusinia he sang the praises of Demeter and their daughter with Daduchos in the name of the people.

The religious philosopher Mircea Eliade refers to the hierophant when defining hierophany as the appearance of the sacred in the profane.

Trivia

In the tarot , i.e. the classic fortune telling cards , the hierophant is card No. V.
