Sanctuary is an American power metal band from Seattle . The band existed between 1985 and 1991 and was the forerunner of the band Nevermore . In 2010 the band announced their reunion.

history

Refuge Denied and Into the Mirror Black

Before the band Sanctuary was formed, Warrel Dane was the singer of the heavy metal band Serpent's Knight, which released a studio album in 1983. Bassist Jim Sheppard played in a glam metal band Sleeze. The band Sanctuary was formed in 1985. The band name was taken from the film Escape to the 23rd Century . In 1986 the band played a demo that brought in a deal with Epic Records . The debut album Refuge Denied was released in 1987. The album was produced by Megadeth singer Dave Mustaine . Refuge Denied is the only album on which Warrel Dane sings in an extremely high pitch. There is speculation that Dane injured himself during the recordings and therefore works with a deeper voice on the later albums. With White Rabbit one located Jefferson Airplane - cover version on the album. Mustaine contributed a guitar solo. The band went on tour with Megadeth and Warlock after the release .

After completing the tour, the band recorded their second and final studio album, Into the Mirror Black . This album was voted 20th on a list of the 500 best metal albums by the editors of the German rock-hard magazine. A video clip was shot for the song Future Tense , which was occasionally played by MTV on Headbangers Ball . During the tour with Forbidden and Death Angel , Sean Blosl left the band and was replaced by the then 19-year-old Jeff Loomis . Even if the album sold well - according to Dane it was more than 100,000 copies worldwide - Epic was not satisfied and tried to push the band towards the beginning grunge boom. As a result, there were tensions within the band about the musical direction. This finally led to its dissolution in 1991. In order to fulfill the contract, Epic released the rare live EP Into the Mirror Live in the same year .

Dissolution, reunion, The Year the Sun Died

A year later, Dane, Loomis and Sheppard formed the band Nevermore . Originally, the musicians wanted to continue under the name Sanctuary, but Rutledge threatened with a lawsuit . To avoid a lawsuit, a new band name was chosen with Nevermore. Lenny Rutledge became a musical producer and owns his own recording studio. Blosl works as an independent music and film producer. Budbill turned his back on music for the time being, but helped Dane with his solo project.

In 2010 Warrel Dane announced a new Sanctuary album. Except for Sean Blosl, the band will come together again in the original line-up. Brad Hull (formerly Forced Entry ) joined the band for Blosl . Lenny Rutledge has already played new songs to Dane, which the latter described as "great". One is looking for a suitable record company. On October 6, 2014, the third studio album The Year the Sun Died was released . With the German director Dirk Behlau they also shot a music video for the title Frozen in the Hugo colliery in Gelsenkirchen-Buer . In 2015, Nick Cordle (including Arch Enemy ) replaced guitarist Brad Hull.

Inception

A year later, Jim Sheppard left the band and was replaced by George Hernandez. On February 24, 2017, the album Inception was released, which contains remixed and remastered demo recordings from 1986. The album includes a cover of the song White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane . It was the last Sanctuary album with singer Warrel Dane, who died of a heart attack on December 13, 2017 in São Paulo .
