Full throttle (computer game)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Vollgas (in the English original Full Throttle ) is a point-and-click adventure published by LucasArts in 1995 with a few action elements. It was the first LucasArts adventure that appeared exclusively on CD-ROM .

action

The player embodies the character Ben, the leader of a motorcycle gang. In the prologue to the game, he witnesses the murder of Malcolm Corley, the director of the country's last motorcycle factory. Although the murder was committed by his deputy, who hopes to change the company's profile to produce minivans, Ben is accused of the murder. He escapes and must henceforth try to prove his innocence and prevent the realignment of Corley Motors.

Game principle and technology

Technically, the title is based on version 7 of LucasArts' own SCUMM language. In this game, LucasArts uses the new operating concept introduced with Sam & Max Hit the Road , which uses the entire screen for the game graphics and only displays action commands and inventory when required. Compared to the control of Sam & Max , the user guidance has been modified and simplified again - if you click the left mouse button, the player moves there, but if you hold it down, a picture appears with the actions “Look” (eyes), “Speech with, drink, etc. "(mouth / tongue)," take, push, pull, etc. "(hand) and" kick "(boots). If you move the mouse over one of these actions and release the key, the player carries out this action. Right-click to open the inventory, which is designed like that of Sam & Max .

Compared to other adventure games of the time, the storyline is relatively short and the number of puzzles is low. The focus is much more on the picture, sound and music backdrop with many video sequences, with the help of which a very dense end-time atmosphere is created. Full throttle therefore also carries the features of an interactive road movie .

Production notes

The game was released in 1995 for the MS-DOS and Mac OS operating systems . For the first time, a disk version was not published, since the technical development at the time meant that CD-ROM drives could be required in the computers. The developers took advantage of the considerably greater free space available through the CD-ROM medium. Three pieces of the game's soundtrack were created by the California hard rock band The Gone Jackals . The main character Ben was originally supposed to be Ben Throttle . Since LucasArts feared a trademark conflict with the character Throttle from the parallel television series Biker Mice from Mars , all references to the last name were removed in the final version. At the time of the development of the (discontinued) successor, the television series had been forgotten and in some drafts the character is referred to as Ben Throttle .

Immediately after the game, LucasArts began planning a new full throttle adventure entitled Full Throttle: Payback. Larry Ahern was appointed chief developer and Bill Tiller as graphic designer for the project . After a development phase of six months, work was stopped even before the game was officially announced. Although the release of drafts of the game by the graphic designer has been prevented by the legal department of LucasArts, some are still available for inspection. In 2002, LucasArts made another attempt to develop a successor and announced Full Throttle: Hell on Wheels . Compared to its predecessor, this game was much more action-oriented in the classic adventure style and was viewed with mixed feelings by the fans of the first part. After the first graphics and a trailer of the game had been shown, the discontinuation of the project due to quality defects was announced in mid-2003. As part of the PlayStation Experience, an event organized by the PlayStation manufacturer Sony , the company Double Fine announced in December 2015 that it was working on a remake of the game for the PS4 , PlayStation Vita and Windows systems on behalf of the rights holder Disney . The remastered version was released in April 2017.
