The House of Computer Games is a traveling museum on the history of computer and video games . It exhibits at public fairs, festivals, universities and museums.

It set up the two largest events for retrogaming and retrocomputing in Germany, the special retro gaming show at Gamescom in Cologne and the Long Night of Computer Games in Leipzig.

With over five million visitors to around a hundred events, it is the most successful traveling show of its kind. As the world's largest collection of game consoles, it was included in the Guinness Book of Records .

At the heart of the collection are 1,000 historical game systems, starting with the first game console Magnavox Odyssey from 1972 through Atari 2600 , Commodore 64 and Amiga 500 to the latest devices such as Nintendo Switch .

The 30,000 exhibits also include 10,000 games, 5,000 magazines, 2,000 books, accessories such as input devices and monitors, calculators and advertising materials.

There is also a digital archive made up of several hundred thousand documents and images.

The pieces have been compiled by the Leipzig editorial office Die Schreibfabrik of journalist René Meyer's since the beginning of the 1990s , initially only as a working archive for the Mogelpower game database . After the first major exhibitions, the name House of Computer Games was created in 2010 .

Exhibitions

The collection is regularly shown at public fairs such as Gamescom , at festivals and congresses as well as in universities and museums.

Some of them are retro shows with historic home computers and game consoles; Some of the exhibitions are dedicated to a topic such as racing games, music games, computer literature or input devices.

Previous highlights were

  • the annual special show Retro Gaming at Gamescom since 2009, which is organized by the House of Computer Games as a 2,000 square meter joint stand
  • Bit Mags at the Leipzig Book Fair 2009 as the world's first exhibition of games and computer literature
  • The exhibition Departure for Adventure. The virtual world of computer games 2019/20 at Hartenfels Castle , the first games exhibition at a castle

In addition to its own exhibitions, the exhibits serve as motifs for TV documentaries, magazine articles and printed matter such as retro calendars, as well as loans for museums.
