Star Wars Battlefront is a first- and third-person shooter based in the Star Wars universe and the sixth part of the Star Wars: Battlefront series . It was developed by Digital Illusions CE and published by Electronic Arts . The game was released in November 2015 for PlayStation 4 , Xbox One and Windows .

The developers consider the game to be a remake of the game of the same name from 2004 . The concept of the game is similar to that of the Battlefield series . On different maps, which show well-known places from the Star Wars films, two factions fight for command posts distributed on the map . Once one of the teams has captured all of these posts, it wins. In the course of these battles, the player takes on the role of a soldier from one of the two factions.

It is the predecessor of Star Wars Battlefront II from 2017.

Gameplay

As in the previous versions, it is also possible to switch between the third-person and first-person shooter perspective in the game. Players can visit moons or planets like Endor , Hoth , Tatooine , Sullust or Jakku . Different vehicles can be used. Space battles were initially absent but were added with the Death Star DLC. New weapons can be exchanged with different team members. There is also no rear sight shooting .

The game focuses on the old Star Wars saga, accordingly the Empire and the Rebel Alliance face each other as factions. As in the predecessors, characters from the films such as Darth Vader , Luke Skywalker , Boba Fett appear. Even R2-D2 and C-3PO have cameos. Unlike its predecessor, the game does not have a single player campaign. However, there are different missions to choose from, which can be played together or alone against the computer. However, they are not linked by a narrative. The multiplayer mode supports up to 40 players simultaneously on one map, 12 maps will be available at the time of publication.

Game modes

The game has both multiplayer and single player modes. The latter can all (except for the tutorial) be played in split-screen or online with a friend. Unlike the previous parts, the game does not include a single player campaign.

Single player modes

So-called "missions" are available for one or two players, as well as the ruff attack and fighter squadron modes :

  • Battle against the AI (be the first to collect 100 tokens, also possible with heroes)
  • Survival missions (you have to fight off 15 waves of opponents)
  • Training missions (learning the basics of the game, including flying X-Wing, controlling AT-ST)
  • Jägerstaffel ( try to take out enemy ships with ships from different Star Wars parts)
  • Ruff attack (it is considered rebels to keep the so-called uplinks online so that reinforcements can locate them to defend themselves against the AT-AT)

Multiplayer modes

The main focus is on online battles for up to 40 players. The following combat modes are available here:

  • Ruff Attack (The Empire must defend its AT-AT Ruff, the Rebels must destroy them)
  • Skirmish (classic team deathmatch )
  • Droid Alert (Be the first team to capture and hold three droids)
  • Freight ( Capture the Flag )
  • Domination (conquering territories)
  • Jägerstaffel (dogfights between the Empire and the rebels)
  • Drop zone (capture escape pods)
  • Heroes VS. Villains (The team that eliminates the enemy heroes first wins)
  • Hero hunt (The players try to kill the hero in order to become the hero themselves)
  • Turning point (the rebels try to storm areas of the empire within a certain time)
  • Battle station (mix of hunter squadron and droid alarm [only playable from September 20, 2016 or 2 weeks later])
  • Transport (The rebels try to escape with the transport, the Empire must stop the transport)
  • Sabotage (the rebels try to destroy imperial reactors and then flee, the empire tries to prevent this)
  • Infiltration (The rebels try to get through an energy shield (Jägerstaffel). Explosives must be deposited at certain points. The escape must then be successful with at least one data tape)

Development history

After selling LucasFilm to Disney, Disney licensed the development rights for Star Wars games to Electronic Arts (EA). As one of the first new games EA announced a new part of the Battlefront series on June 10, 2013 at E3 . The game is detached from its predecessors. The open beta of Star Wars: Battlefront ran from 8 to 13 October 2015 on the online game platform Origin . Over nine million players took part in this.

Sales figures

On May 5, 2015, Electronic Arts announced that they expected nine to ten million copies to be sold by the first fiscal year of 2016, which ended March 31.

reception

In addition to praise for the graphics and sound, the game also received significant criticism. Above all, the lack of a single player campaign and the low number of eight game levels ("Maps", twelve with training missions) in the basic version were criticized, with all regular missions also being designed as first-person shooters . Spaceships and vehicles can only be played in three training missions and in multiplayer mode, which requires an internet connection. A Season Pass with Downloadable Content (DLC), which is almost as expensive as the actual game, has to be purchased to unlock 16 more maps. Chip.de commented: That is perfidious, that is unfair, and once again the image of the junkie comes to mind, who is being waved around in front of the nose with the next fix. On Metacritic , the average rating was 75 out of 100, the ratings in game magazines between 60 and 85 percent.
