Crysis 2 is a computer game by the German developer Crytek and the successor to Crysis . Release date was March 22, 2011 in the United States and March 24 , 2011 in Europe and Australia . Crysis 2 was released for Windows , PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 . In Crysis 2 is the second part of the first-person shooter trilogy, whose action in New York plays. The soundtrack was composed by Oscar winner Hans Zimmer , among others .

action

The campaign takes place in 2023. After a multitude of climate disasters, humanity is on the verge of collapse. The aliens (Ceph) already known from Crysis start another invasion with the aim of destroying all of humanity. The game begins in a submarine in which you take on the role of Force Recon soldier Alcatraz for the first time. However, shortly after entering New York Bay, it is attacked by enemy Ceph ships and the protagonist has to escape from the sinking submarine. In the New York harbor basin, the survivors are again shot at by the Ceph and apparently all but Alcatraz are killed. This is saved by the Prophet , who puts on his nanosuit and then commits suicide with the words “Don't forget me” because he is infected with the Ceph virus.

When the protagonist wakes up again, he first has to fight his way through an army of private mercenaries called CELL. These elite soldiers work for Crynet Systems , the manufacturer of the nanosuit, which wants the suit back. After defeating various troops, you learn that Chino, who apparently drowned in the submarine, is still alive. Together with the US Marines you fight your way through the partially destroyed New York.

After killing Commander Lockhart, the commander of the mercenaries, you learn that Hargreave, the owner of Crynet Systems, is only kept alive by a machine and drugs and can only communicate with the outside world through these very machines. Hargreave, who was previously friendly to the protagonist, is now trying to cut him out of the nanosuit in order to get into it himself, since this biotechnological suit would be Hargreave's only possibility to exist outside of his "life support machine".

When the facility is attacked by the Ceph, Hargreave orders the CELL mercenaries to aid Alcatraz before his death. In the final level, which takes place in New York's floating Central Park , Alcatraz has to destroy the main structure of the aliens and thus save the earth from the second invasion (after Nomad in the first part) by the aliens.

The game ends with a flashback . It becomes clear that Prophet had united with the nanosuit before he died. The Ceph are destroyed and the review ends with a shot of Alcatraz in Prophets Suit in front of Central Park with the sentence "They call me a prophet".

Development history

On June 1, 2009, Crysis 2 was announced in an official press release. The single player mode of the successor to Crysis was developed in the main studio in Frankfurt, while the multiplayer mode was developed at Crytek UK in Nottingham . Crysis 2 is based on the CryEngine 3 . A multiplayer - demo was released on January 25, 2011 for the Xbox 360, on 1 March 2011 for Windows and on March 15 for the PlayStation 3, but for the latter console is not in Germany.

A leaked beta version from January 2011 appeared for the first time on February 11th on various torrent sites for download. In this preliminary version of Crysis 2 , the complete single player mode as well as the multiplayer mode can be played. Limitations on the other hand are more frequent bugs as well as graphic errors and unfinished scenes. It is unclear who is responsible for the unwanted publication. Chief developer Cevat Yerli said: “As you all have probably heard, an early and unfinished version of Crysis 2 appeared online. Even if we are very disappointed with these events, we are also overwhelmed by the support we have received from you, our community ”. However, he also made it clear that the finished commercial version was significantly better than the illegal beta version, Yerli continues: “We are still working on providing our honest and true fans with a great gaming experience. I hope you will enjoy Crysis 2 on PC because we believe it is our best PC game yet ”.

Despite the fact that psycho does not play a major role in Crysis 2, it still appears. In the level "Endstation" right at the beginning, where we have to go through the lock to get to Colonel Barclay, there are three arrested Cell mercenaries on the right side. One of them tries to persuade the Marines and says he had been in the US Army for nine years. Alcatraz / Prophet reacts waiting to this statement and listens to the argument between the Cell mercenary and the marine until the end. Anyone who knows the voice of Psycho from Crysis 3 will recognize this voice with this mercenary too. It is the voice actor Jan-David Rönfeldt. The reaction of Alcatraz / Prophet to the dialogue exchange, as well as the background story of the Cell Mercenary, as well as the dubbing voice of Jan-David Rönfeldt indicates that the Cell Mercenary is the former Special Forces soldier and the protagonist of Crysis Warhead, Psycho acts.

publication

In addition to the standard version, a limited and a nano edition were also released. The limited edition, which is actually only intended for pre-orders, contains purely virtual multiplayer bonuses compared to the standard edition. In addition to the game in a steel book , the nano edition also includes a 28 cm figure of the protagonist Alcatraz as well as a high-gloss art ribbon and a special nanosuit backpack. In addition, individual steelbooks are also sold in some electronics stores.

The first patch for Crysis 2 was released on the day of its release. This contained some bug fixes as well as the removal of the auto-aim function in multiplayer mode, which was criticized in the multiplayer beta and only available on consoles. In the meantime, a DirectX -11 patch with improved textures was released on June 27, 2011. Patch 1.9 not only includes DirectX 11, but also fixes some bugs in multiplayer mode.

reception

With a metascore of 86% for the Xbox 360 and 87% for the PC and PlayStation 3 versions, the game was generally well received by the press. GamePro magazine wrote : "Crysis 2 is a must for shooter fans and finally also a genre representative who goes against the trend of shorter and shorter campaigns." However, the lack of the "wow moments: the one huge opponent or THAT." Crysis 2 does not offer an event that I will still remember in months. The opponents' AI also gets stuck here and there. "

GameStar magazine headlined Crysis 2 as a “technically almost perfect noble shooter.” However, “something special is also missing, that one moment that I associate with the game. If someone asks me about my favorite scene from Crysis 2, I can't think of any. Maybe there are just too many of them. ”In general, however, Crysis 2 plays“ much more smoothly than its predecessor. More speed, more action. "

The Swiss online magazine GBase.ch awarded 8.5 out of 10 points for the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of Crysis 2. Above all, the varied battles, the improved Nanosuit, the extensive online Mode and the technical presentation. The confused plot, the pale characters and the mixed enemy AI were criticized.

On April 25, 2012, politicians from the CDU / CSU parliamentary group criticized the decision of the jury of the Federal Association of Interactive Entertainment Software (BIU) , the Federal Association of the Computer Games Industry (GAME) and the Federal Government to nominate Crysis 2 for the German Computer Game Award as the best German game finally got it too. In a statement by Wolfgang Börnsen , media policy spokesman for the CDU / CSU, it was said: “The CDU / CSU parliamentary group dissociates itself from the decision of the independent jury to nominate a so-called killer game in the 'Best German Game' category. We consider this nomination to be unjustifiable. ”The members of the Bundestag Sebastian Blumenthal (FDP), Siegmund Ehrmann (SPD), Malte Spitz and Tabea Rößner (both Greens) as well as the Christian-democratic cnetz - Verein für Netzpolitik rejected this criticism of the jury.

continuation

In early 2012, Crytek announced at the Game Developers Conference (GDC), as suspected, a sequel that will be called Crysis 3 . The game will run with the further developed CryEngine 3 . After the existence of Crysis 3 inadvertently became known on April 11 through a bug at Origin , Crytek and Electronic Arts confirmed the continuation on April 16, 2012. In the third part of the series there will be a reunion with Prophet, who is on a Vengeance campaign against the CELL Corporation is located. Crysis 3 will be released in Germany on February 21, 2013. As in the second part of Crysis, the plot is set in New York, although the city has changed significantly and now looks more like the jungle-like ambience of the first part. The player has to find his way in seven different environments. The official trailer for Crysis 3 was released on April 24, 2012.
