The CryEngine family

CryEngine is a game engine from the German development studio Crytek .

CryEngine

The first game to use this engine was Far Cry , also developed by the Crytek company and released in 2004. The CryEngine had an outstanding graphic quality for the time, based on techniques such as bump mapping , pixel shader 2.0 and vertex shader 2.0. It was particularly characterized by its water display and the great visibility. The engine was gradually expanded in connection with the Far Cry game; with patches came features such as High Dynamic Range Rendering added, Geometry instancing, support for 64-bit CPUs, offset mapping and support for newer versions shader (Shader Model 2.0b and 3.0). For use in the technology demo The Project also has depth of field effect added.

CryEngine 2

On November 16, 2007 the game Crysis , which uses the CryEngine 2 , was released. The CryEngine 2 was one of the first engines to support DirectX 10 . It contained all the features of the first version and was expanded to include volumetric clouds, more detailed facial representations, plant movement when in contact with the game character, and more. The CryEngine 2 thus often exhausted the performance potential of the hardware generation that was current at the time of release.

CryEngine 3

On March 27, 2009 at GDC 2009, Crytek presented the CryEngine 3 . The CryEngine 3 runs alongside the PC on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles . It also runs on Wii U , Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 . According to Crytek, the engine's sandbox allows simultaneous work on all three platforms. With sufficient computing power, even 3D output (according to the off-center projection principle) in 4K digital cinema format is possible. A free version of CryEngine 3 has been available since August 18, 2011. An additional license is required for commercial projects.

The CryEngine 3 originally only supported DirectX 9.0c. Thanks to a patch that was subsequently released, DirectX 11 is currently also supported, which has a visible effect on the quality of the graphics output. At the GDC 2014, Crytek announced in cooperation with AMD that it would support their Direct3D alternative AMD Mantle . Among other things, this should significantly increase the rendering quality. The tech demo around the figure Ruby created by AMD will also rely on the CryEngine.

At Gamescom on August 18, 2011, a free SDK was published that can be used to develop non-commercial games.

CryEngine

The CryEngine published on August 21, 2013 was not numbered. Internally, however, it was given version number 3.6.0, which indicates that while this version can be considered the fourth version in marketing, internally it is not.

From version 3.8.1 the CryEngine supports OpenGL as an equivalent graphic interface.

CryEngine V

The CryEngine V was released on March 16, 2016. The V in the name on the one hand bypasses the unexplained numbering of the previous version, but is probably also an allusion to the native virtual reality support of the engine.

It also supports the Vulkan and DirectX 12 graphics interfaces .

License model

Since the CryEngine V, the customer can decide for himself how much the CryEngine is worth to him. Even with an amount of 0 €, the developers have the full source code and full marketing rights. A part of the self-determined price can (depending on the user's wishes) go to their own Indie Development Fund to support independent game developers.

On March 20, 2018, a 5 percent levy was introduced on the income generated by the game. The first 5,000 copies sold are license-free. The games sold on Crytek's own platform "CRYENGINE" are also license-free.
