Far Cry is a first person shooter from 2004. It is the first part of the later Far Cry game series. It was developed by the German company Crytek . By using the latest technology, such as DirectX 9.0c and the Shader Model 3.0, the game achieved an unprecedented graphic quality. It was particularly convincing with its realistic water display and distance view . Far Cry has been sold about 2.6 million times.

Shortly after the demo appeared, various fan mods appeared on the Internet . Many modifications (add-ons) are also available for the full version.

action

The plot of the game has parallels to HG Wells' novel The Island of Dr. Moreau , who expresses man's fear of the power of science.

The player controls the main character of the game, Jack Carver, a former elite soldier in the US Marines who has retired and now earns his living with boat trips in Micronesia (South Pacific). He is supposed to take the journalist Valerie Constantine to a group of islands not shown on the map, since Valerie supposedly wants to take pictures of Japanese ruins from the Second World War there. On the way back from the island, Carver's boat was shot at (with a bazooka) and sunk. Under fire from unknown mercenaries , he is washed into a cave. From this point on, the player has control over the figure. In the first level there is a radio that the mysterious figure Harlan Doyle uses to report. He informs the player about his situation and helps with useful hints. At the beginning of the game the focus is on the search for the captured Valerie, later Jack's goal is to escape from the islands. Doyle also assists Jack with vital information about enemy forces, how they can be weakened and sabotaged, and sometimes even smuggles him through patrols on a boat. But Doyle leaves Jack in the dark about his own function on the islands and does not go into any further details.

In the course of the game you will find secret research laboratories of the Krieger Corporation in the interior of the islands , in which mutants (so-called trigens ), which have been treated with a substance that changes the genome (a mutagen ), are bred. Due to an incident, however, a lot of these mutated beings were released and as a kind of third faction they become a murderous danger for both the mercenaries and the player himself.

Editor and patches

The Sandbox editor included with the PC version is a tool that you can use to create maps or entire campaigns yourself. It's the same editor that the developers at Crytek used.

On August 2, 2004, the first version of the software development kit, long awaited by the community, was released . It contains extensive documentation and tools that were used to develop the game and that were now available for mod development. On September 22, 2005, the last version of the SDK, the C ++ SDK, was released.

The modding community is still active and is supported by the Crytek community managers in the official modding forum Crymod.com. There are also a number of finished and in development mods.

On May 10, 2005, Crytek provided an approx. 500 MB 64-bit upgrade, which, assuming a 64-bit processor and a Windows XP Professional x64 operating system, higher-resolution textures and more detailed graphics (Bump mapping for rock and stone objects) and a greater range of vision. In addition, special 64-bit maps were included in a so-called content pack (again around 430 MB in size). This made Far Cry (CryEngine), along with UT 2004, one of the first closed source games with native 64-bit support. However, the special update was only released in version 1.32 and thus restricts the possibility of playing the game online.

After patch 1.33, the last official patch was released with 1.4, which among other things supported the use of a gamepad and contained numerous improvements and bug fixes. Since, in addition to the maps for the multiplayer mode, the settings for the weapons have also been seriously revised, the online community has now split into two camps.

development

Far Cry originally offered support for the anti-cheat software PunkBuster , which was discontinued after a while. After that it was still possible to play FarCry cheat-free online with patch 1.6. This unofficial community patch was the result of many suggestions from the online community and, in addition to cheat protection, offers numerous other improvements in the game. After Ubisoft switched off the Far Cry registration server in October 2016, it is no longer possible to use the multiplayer component via the patch.

The CryEngine developed for the game offered the best representation of vegetation for the time .

Others

The rights to the Far Cry brand are owned by Ubisoft , who also developed the successors, as well as Far Cry Instincts .

In the original game there are a number of allusions, such as Playmerc (Play mercenary, an allusion to the well-known Playboy magazine ) or Frontschwein .

The first part of the series is the only one in which the protagonist can be seen in cutscenes. From FAR CRY INSTINCTS onwards you look at these from the first-person perspective.

Age rating and indexing

For the German version of Far Cry , the so-called ragdoll behavior in the physics engine has been deactivated. This means that dead opponents no longer react physically correctly to external influences, e.g. B. on fire. Despite this defusing and the approval by the USK ("approved without youth approval "), the game was indexed on March 29, 2004 by the Federal Testing Agency for Media Harmful to Young People (BPjM), as instructions were available on the Internet shortly after the game was published Undo the defusing and thus make the game "content" identical to the English version. This version of Far Cry has been on the index for media harmful to minors since April 2, 2004, as well as the demo and the English version.

On April 16, 2004, the developers brought a more revised version onto the German market, which makes it even more difficult to add the ragdoll effects again. In the basic setting of this version the corpses of the opponents disappear after a while and only their weapons and equipment (protective vests, grenades etc.) remain, which the player can pick up. In addition, killed enemies no longer leave clouds of blood in the water.
