Far Cry 5 is a first person shooter with open world game provided by Ubisoft Montreal has been developed. The fifth main part in the Far Cry -Spielereihe it appeared on March 27, 2018 Microsoft Windows , PlayStation 4 and Xbox One .
action
The action takes place in fictional Hope County, Montana in the United States . The priest named Joseph Seed who lives there believes in an impending collapse of civilization and that he was chosen to protect the people from it. To this end, he founded the organization “Project at Eden's Gate”. The ideology of this sect contains many elements of Christian eschatology such as: B. the idea of the Seven Seals - some of which are quoted during the plot - or the threatening end of the world. Eden's Gate is evolving into a radical cult that forces people to join it and intimidates not to contact the outside world. Eden's Gate members and the rest of Hope County clashes and armed conflicts develop.
The player is an unnamed Deputy Sheriff who is a member of the Hope County Resistance Group. He and his colleagues are said to have arrested sect leader Joseph Seed, who describes himself only as "father". However, the arrest fails and after some fighting, in which the Seed family capture the Deputy Sheriff's colleagues and divide them up, the player wakes up on the island of Dutch, a resident of Hope County and opponent of the sect. This guides the player from now on on his island, whereby he is introduced to the game mechanics. When Dutch's island is freed from the sect, the player can move largely freely in the game world. Then the player has three options to continue the action (these are named in the order recommended by the game), whereby he can also work on the tasks in parallel:
- The Liberation of Holland Valley (Controlled by John Seed)
- The Liberation of the Henbane River (controlled by Faith Seed)
- The Liberation of the Whitetail Mountains (controlled by Jacob Seed)
In each of these regions it is important to build up a resistance (see principle of the game), to help three important resistance fighters and finally to defeat the respective herald of the "father" in the region and thus to save the colleague caught there. In the course of the liberation of these areas, the player is confronted several times with the heralds, through which one also gets to know their character and way of thinking better.
In Holland Valley, the first thing you have to do is to go to the "Rae Rae Farm", where you free the dog Boomer. Then you are asked by Dutch to free the village of Falls End, in which Paster Jerome lives. This organizes again and again attacks on the sect. While building the resistance, you are kidnapped twice by John and his henchmen. He always tries to force the deputy to "confess". However, the deputy manages to escape every time. When you have built up the resistance, John Seed invites you to Falls End. You can defeat this after a long fight, some of which also takes place in the air, and take your key to a bunker. In the bunker he is holding Deputy Hudson, who was also part of the team that was supposed to arrest the "father", who was then freed.
On the Henbane River, the drug "Bliss" (translated bliss ) is produced, which is used by the sect in the whole game world, and through which the user puts himself in a kind of dream world. Several times the player falls into the Bliss dream world and meets Faith Seed there, who talks about her life and talks to him. After that you always find yourself in front of Hope County Prison, where you have to help Virgil Minkler and Sheriff Earl Whitehorse to defend it against the sect and to organize their resistance group Cougars (because of the pumas that are common in the region ). If you have weakened the sect on the Henbane River, you can compete against Faith Seed in the Bliss dream world. However, she first kills Virgil and kidnaps the sheriff. After defeating Faith, you have to destroy the Bliss production and save the sheriff. Once that is done, the Henbane River has also been freed.
The Whitetail Mountains are terrorized by Jacob Seed, who kidnaps the player several times. With every kidnapping you are drugged after a cutscene and come into a dream world in which you are supposed to kill all the people you find within a certain time and thus bow to Jacob's fundamentally euthanized ideology and "thin out the herd" . While one is trapped in this dream, the song Only You is played all the time , which is intended to condition the deputy . After you have been to this dream world for the first time, you are ultimately saved by Eli, the leader of the Whitetail militia. This helps one to continue to make life difficult for the sect. The last time Jacob was kidnapped, the boss in the dream world, who, unlike all other opponents, had no face before, turns out to be Eli, which makes it clear that the deputy has been successfully conditioned. Eli is shot by the deputy. Then Jacob is attacked and killed. He also gives you a key to his bunker, in which he is holding Deputy Pratt prisoner. If you liberate it, the Whitetail Mountains are also liberated.
When the player has liberated all regions, Joseph Seed invites them to his estate. It gives you two options:
- Resist: A fight breaks out on the property between the player and his hypnotized allies. These are de-hypnotized by incapacitating them and resuscitating them. When Joseph Seed can be arrested, the collapse starts, as anticipated by the Seed family: an airplane drops an atomic bomb. You can just get into a car with Joseph, Hudson, Pratt and Whitehorse and drive off. Near Dutch's bunker, which is also the target, a tree falls on the car and everyone but the Deputy Sheriff and Joseph die. The player wakes up in the bunker and sees Dutch's body on the floor. Joseph sits down on a chair and tells him that he would love to kill him to kill his relatives, but that the deputy sheriff is now the last bit of family he has left.
- Leaving: The player and Pratt, Hudson and Whitehorse get into the car and drive away. The sheriff doesn't want to just let the "father" get away and turn to the National Guard. He turns on the radio in which the song Only You is playing (which activates the so-called conditioning of the Deputy Sheriff and triggers the killing instinct.) The edge of the screen turns red, which means that the song is working. Then the outro begins.
Gameplay
As with the previous games of the Far Cry -Spielereihe is also in Far Cry 5 an open world where the player explore the entire world and can interact with it. The game world is divided into five regions: Dutch's island (where the game begins after the failed arrest of the "father"), Joseph's estate and the three parts that are under the control of a sibling of the "father" (Faith, Jacob and John).
Tasks can be completed throughout the game world, and when completed, resistance points are collected in order to free the regions from the control of the sect. The tasks consist of, for example, freeing hostages, destroying sect property and shrines or taking sect outposts. The campaign can be played either in single player or in co-op mode .
A new feature is the introduction of a character editor, with which players can edit the appearance of their characters in terms of gender, skin color and appearance.

reception
Far Cry 5 received mostly positive reviews from the trade press. The online database Metacritic , which collects and evaluates test reports, calculated between 78 and 82 out of 100 points for the various versions of the game. The ratings for Far Cry 5 were slightly weaker than those of the predecessor.
In the United States, the plot and the setting of the game sparked a discussion about a possible reference or comment by the developers on political developments in the country, with regard to the election of Donald Trump as US president and the associated strengthening of the alt-right - Movement, off. In fact, the movement announced a boycott of the game because it would involve fighting white Americans. However, Ubisoft's franchise boss Dan Hay claims that the idea for the game was three years old, but also speaks of real sources of inspiration.
The game hit the headlines long before it was released, as a petition on Change.org called for the antagonists , i.e. white radical Christians , to be replaced with Islamists or urban gangs , or for the game to be redesigned in such a way that an understanding of the action was taken the sect arises. This is justified by the advance of Islam in the United States, perceived by the petitioners , the increase in gang crime and the alleged suppression of ultra-conservative groups by the US government . Likewise, the petition relates to multiculturalism , anti-Americanism and the GamerGate controversy . Based on the argumentation, it was discussed whether the petition was satire or a marketing gag.
The animal rights organization PETA demanded that the game be banned after the publication, as the player had the opportunity to fish in it. A “hunt for fish” is “unethical and glorifies violence” - fish are “curious vertebrates with individual personalities”.
Merchandising
- Even before the game was released, a 30-minute film adaptation about the game was released on Prime Video .
- A novel was published in February 2018 under the title Far Cry 5: Forgiveness , written by Urban Waite . The novel deals with the history of the video game and was published by Panini Verlag .
backgrounds
The cover on the case of the game is based on Leonardo da Vinci's famous mural The Last Supper , as the characters of the game on it largely assume the postures of the people depicted in the painting.
The drug Bliss is scopolamine , which is obtained from the white thorn apple ( Datura stramonium ).
The live action promotional videos were filmed in Great Falls , Cascade County , Montana. It was also named for the largest settlement in the game Falls End.
The name "Project at Eden's Gate" is an allusion to the post-apocalyptic cult Heaven's Gate and the biblical Garden of Eden . The fictional cult takes inspiration from the actual Branch Davidians as well as the Peoples Temple movement.
The hiding places with supplies in the game go back to the prepper movement, originally from the United States , which is massively arming itself for disaster.
In the film Iron Sky: The Coming Race, the priest Donald appears, like Joseph Seed with his typical glasses.
