Far Cry Primal is a first person shooter with an open game world , published by the French publisher Ubisoft . It is an offshoot of the Far Cry series of games. Far Cry Primal was released on February 23, 2016 for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 , the Windows version followed on March 1, 2016. The development was led by Ubisoft Montreal . The game is set in the Stone Age and revolves around the story of Takkar, who began as an unarmed hunter and rose to become a tribal leader.

action

The scenario takes place in the Mesolithic , around 10,000 BC. The setting is the Oros Valley, a fictional stretch of land in Central Europe. Takkar, a hunter of the Wenja tribe, is the only one of his hunting group to survive an attack by a saber-toothed tiger. At first alone, he makes his way back to his tribe to find that they have been scattered to the winds by attacks by the Udam tribe. Takkar must gather the survivors of his tribe and fight against the Udam and the Izila.

Gameplay

In terms of the game principle, Primal largely corresponds to its predecessors. Firearms, vehicles and other items that did not fit into the time horizon were replaced. The choice of weapons was limited to spear , ax or bows . It is not possible for players to purchase these weapons, instead they have to make them themselves using materials such as wood or stone. In general, the focus has shifted to survival skills. Food, clothing and other auxiliary items such as torches must also be made from natural materials that the player must collect and hunt in the game world. A new function is the taming of animals. Takkar can use it to make certain wild animals his allies and, for example, use them in fights against opponents or ride on them.

development

Speculations about a new Far Cry series offshoot arose in October 2015 when users found an entry in the database of the online distributor Steam for an unannounced title called Far Cry Sigma . Since Far Cry 4 had only been released the year before, the assumptions were in the direction of a stand-alone expansion such as Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon . A direct sequel to Blood Dragon had already been ruled out by Ubisoft Montreal's creative director Mark Hutchinson before Far Cry 4 was released . On October 5th, 2015, Ubisoft officially introduced Far Cry Primal and its Stone Age scenario.

The game is considered a bridging title between Far Cry 4 and a Far Cry 5 that was not announced at the time of the release of Primal . For the game world, the developers used the heightmaps from Far Cry 4 , so the topography of both game worlds is largely identical. The music of the game comes from Jason Graves ( 24 ). The localization of the game was realized by mouse-power GmbH. Far Cry Primal uses Denuvo Anti-Tamper as copy protection.

Instead of using common languages for the dialogues, Ubisoft, together with scientists, invented three forms of a proto-Indo-European language , each spoken by one of the three factions. The translation is done in subtitles. It should be noted, however, that the Indo-European original language did not yet exist at the time the game is set (10,000 BC).

Far Cry Primal received mostly benevolent reviews, but their ratings were below those of its predecessors. On Metacritic the average rating for Windows is 75/100, for Xbox One 79 and for PS4 76.

The Gamestar praised the scenario, but also criticized that the game very put to the familiar formula of Ubisoft game, mainly "the various checking off of icons on the mini map and filling experience bar" meant. In addition, the developers missed delivering a sophisticated presentation of the close combat, as there is neither a convincing sense of collision, nor evasive steps or blocking movements are possible. Furthermore, the mission design is very uniform and hardly offers any highlights. According to The Verge, the game would probably have gotten better without being part of the Far Cry franchise, because the way it is played, despite the unusual scenario, is ultimately too similar to the other titles in the series. The large number of people you come across is particularly annoying. Many encounters therefore led to fights that are significantly less interesting than in the other series offshoots. The rest would correspond to the well-known formula of the previous title, such as the generic liberation of any unfortunate tribal comrades or the appearance of enemy hunting parties, but would not fit the scenario well. Instead of a savior, you feel more like a parent whose children won't let you rest.

successor

May 2017 Ubisoft announced Far Cry 5, a new offshoot of the series, which is located in Hope County, Montana, USA. The focus is on a religious sect made up of fanatics. Either alone or together with a friend, you take action against this association and try to bring about order. The game was released on March 27, 2018. Far Cry 5 was released for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One .
