Dunia Engine is a game engine that was developed by Ubisoft Montreal specifically for the Far Cry series and is used exclusively by games in this series. The word "Dunia" comes from Arabic and means "world" or "earth". The latest game based on this engine is Far Cry New Dawn , an open-world first-person shooter from Ubisoft Montreal in collaboration with Ubisoft Kiev , Ubisoft Romania , Ubisoft Shanghai .

Use and development

In July 2007 the company Ubisoft officially announced that it would develop the Far Cry 2 computer game based on the new Dunia engine. According to an interview with Senior Product Manager Michiel Verheijdt, only two to three percent of the CryEngine 1 is reused in the Dunia engine. On January 4th, 2008, Ubisoft announced that it would also release an Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 version of the game. The game was released in Europe on October 24, 2008 for Windows, Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. On November 5th, 2008 a patch with a partially improved engine was released.

The Dunia Engine has numerous features, including:

  • dynamic vegetation [RealTree] (including growth and offspring of plants)

  • Emission or separation of various lights
  • amBX technology from Philips for special effects

Dunia Engine can run on DirectX 10 as well as DirectX 9 on Windows Vista. Dunia Engine is less hardware demanding than CryEngine 2, a similar game engine developed by Crytek.
