Kurt Schwerdtfeger
Kurt Schwerdtfeger (born June 20, 1897 in German Puddiger ; † August 8, 1966 in Himmelsthür ) was a German sculptor and university professor .
Life
Schwerdtfeger was born in Deutsch Puddiger in Pomerania in 1897. He took part in the First World War as a soldier . He then studied philosophy and art history at the University of Königsberg and the University of Jena , then from 1920 to 1924 at the Bauhaus in Weimar . There he created from 1922 to 1923 together with Ludwig Hirschfeld-Mack with the reflex color light shows a work as well as an example of abstract film, both the idea of spatial art in the 20th century changed the avant-garde of the 1920s and as a precursor of expanded cinema may apply .
In 1925 he became a teacher at the Stettiner Werkschule for creative work, where he led the sculpture class. During this time he made architectural sculptures in Pomerania and Danzig . In 1937 he was dismissed from his teaching post, and at the same time his works were removed from public exhibitions in museums. From 1939 to 1945 he served as a soldier in World War II .
After the war, in 1946 he became professor of fine arts at the Alfeld University of Education . He died in 1966.
Schwerdtfeger was a member of the German Werkbund until 1932 . He also belonged to the artist group Das Neue Pommern, which existed from 1930 to 1933 . In 1953 he joined the German Association of Artists , which dedicated its annual exhibition in Karlsruhe in 1967 to the memory of him and the sculptor Karl Hartung .
