The rescue medal of the state of Saxony-Anhalt was donated on September 7, 2005 by the Prime Minister Wolfgang Böhmer as state recognition. Saxony-Anhalt was therefore the last of the five new federal states to donate a rescue medal after reunification.

Award requirements

The Rescue Medal is awarded to people who have saved human lives at the risk of their own lives or who have averted a serious threat from the general public. If the rescue act was carried out without any immediate danger to the life of the rescuer, instead of being awarded the rescue medal, there is a public commendation. Both honors can only be considered if the rescue act itself took place in the area of the state of Saxony-Anhalt , or if the rescuer is resident in this state. Recognition for rescue acts outside the state borders of Saxony-Anhalt can only be considered if the rescuer has not received state approval from the state in which he carried out the rescue act.

Award exceptions

  • a) People who are entrusted with protecting the lives of others for official or professional reasons, or who are responsible for averting dangers to the general public, are granted state recognition, i. H. the rescue medal or the public commendation are only granted if they have significantly exceeded their duties when performing the rescue act .
  • b) People who have distinguished themselves through special behavior in the course of fire or rescue operations , including in the event of a disaster, will not receive the rescue medal . Instead, they are to be awarded the Fire Protection Decoration or Disaster Protection Decoration.

The state of Saxony-Anhalt has also regulated that the rescue medal on the ribbon can be awarded repeatedly, including to rescuers who have lost their lives in the act of rescue (posthumously).

Award process

Suggestions that result in state recognition in the form of the rescue medal or public praise are to be sent to the highest state authorities by the districts or urban districts in which the rescuer has his usual place of residence. The districts or urban districts have to enclose a report with the application, which gives a coherent description of the rescue act. It must also contain:

  • a) First and last name, age and address of the rescuer and the rescued person,
  • b) Date, place and time of the rescue act, as well as
  • c) for persons who have carried out a rescue act due to employment or professional relationships, an extra reason

The application must then be sent by the administrative districts or urban districts to the Ministry of the Interior. The Ministry of the Interior then checks whether the rescue medal or a public commendation can be considered and forwards its decision to the Prime Minister.

Award procedure

The ultimate decision whether the rescue medal is awarded or a public commendation is made is made by the Prime Minister. The rescue medal and certificate are then handed over by the Prime Minister himself, but he can also transfer this authority to the Minister of the Interior. The public commendation with a certificate, on the other hand, is carried out by the Minister of the Interior, also with a certificate. He, too, can delegate the handing over to other people in individual cases. The rescue medal becomes the property of the borrower. In the case of posthumous awards, the rescue medal and certificate are given to the bereaved. After the rescuer has given his consent, the awarding of the rescue medal and the public commendation will be made public in the Ministerialblatt of Saxony-Anhalt.

Shape, texture and way of wearing the rescue medal

The rescue medal is made of fine silver and has a diameter of 30 mm. On its front it shows the coat of arms of the state of Saxony-Anhalt and the semicircular inscription: Saxony-Anhalt coat of arms and lettering are embossed. The back bears the embossed lettering in the middle: For rescue from danger , whereby the lettering itself is framed by a surrounding oak leaf wreath. The rescue medal is worn on a yellow-black ribbon with silver-lined ribbon edges. Instead of the rescue medal, a strap buckle can also be worn with a miniature of the front of the rescue medal in the center.
