Mount Pirongia is an extinct volcano in the region Waikato on the North Island of New Zealand . It reaches a height of 959 meters, making it the highest mountain in the region. The volcano was active in the late Pliocene and early Pleistocene .
It is located 22 km west of Te Awamutu and eight kilometers from the small settlement of Pirongia in a forest reserve. It can already be seen from the Tasman Sea as it is only 25 km from the coast at Aotea Harbor .
The Mount Pirongia Forest Park is among hunters from Hamilton popular for day trips. Several herds of wild goats live on its bush-covered slopes. The park is managed by the Waikato Office of the Department of Conservation in Hamilton.
