Hakarimata Range is a name for the hills and coastlines of the Waikato region of New Zealand , which extend between the flood plain of the Waikato River and the Tasman Sea .
Parts of the area are protected by landscape protection areas near Huntly and Ngaruawahia as well as the Pirongia Forest Park . There are several hiking trails through the mountains that offer good views of the Waikato Plains below.
The New Zealand State Highway 36 roughly follows the east side of the mountain range. The city of Hamilton is approximately 20 km to the east.
