Far Cry 3 is a computer game from the genre of the open world - first person shooter and the third part of the Far Cry game series. The game first appeared on November 29, 2012 for Windows , Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 . It was developed by various studios of the French group Ubisoft under the leadership of Ubisoft Montreal .

The game is set on two fictional islands in the Pacific . The player takes on the role of Jason Brody, a young American who falls into the hands of pirates while on vacation with friends. After escaping from the pirate camp, he tries to free his friends and kill the pirate leader, Vaas Montenegro.

Far Cry 3 builds on the game concept of its predecessor. The central element is the spacious, freely accessible game world in which the player has numerous options for action. New functions compared to its predecessor are animal hunts, mini-games such as poker or knife throwing and the possibility of gradually developing your own character and equipping them with new skills.

Far Cry 3 received a positive response from the press . Testers praised, among other things, the innovations compared to the predecessor, the diverse possibilities of the player and the varied design of the missions. The plot also received a lot of attention. While some press reviews criticized it as implausible and superficial, others rated it as innovative and profound because of some unusual approaches for shooters, such as the incorporation of method acting , a teaching method in acting.

The game achieved high sales. Almost two years after its release, Ubisoft announced that Far Cry 3 had sold ten million copies. The successor Far Cry 4 was released on November 18, 2014 .

action

Far Cry 3 tells a story independent of its predecessors. The protagonist Jason Brody and his friends Oliver, Daisy, Keith and Liza as well as his brothers Grant and Riley are captured by pirates while on vacation on the tropical island of Rook Island . Jason manages to escape from the pirate base with his brother Grant. The latter, however, is shot by the pirate leader, Vaas, while trying to escape. Jason is now found by Dennis Rogers, a member of the local Rakyat tribe. Rogers tries to convince Jason to help the rakyat in their fight against the pirates. Jason agrees, because he wants to free his friends from the violence of the pirates. The rakyat then grant him access to weapons and equipment.

With Dennis' help, Jason tracks down Daisy, who was also able to flee from the pirates, in the house of Doctor Earnhardt. This shows Jason a cave near his house, which from then on serves as a shelter for him and his friends. There you will also find a boat, but it is not fit to drive.

Together with the Rakyat, Jason conquers the pirate island by eliminating its numerous outposts. In doing so, he frees almost all of his friends, only he does not find his brother Riley. Meanwhile, Dennis introduces him to the rakyat leader, Citra. Jason also meets the CIA agent Willis Huntley, who was set on the slave trader Hoyt Volker, who also controls Vaas' pirate gang. Huntley gives Jason information about the islands and helps him free his friend Oliver. He also informs him that Keith has been sold to the slave trader Bambi 'Buck' Hughes. Hughes offers Jason to release Keith if he can get him a Chinese dagger buried on the island. Jason finds the dagger and gives it to the slave dealer. When he still refuses to release Keith, Jason kills him. Keith then informs Jason that his brother Riley was shot by the pirates.

Eventually Jason attacks Vaas in his fortress. Drugged in advance of Citra, he struck down Vaas. However, the pirate threat persists. South of Rook Island is a base controlled by Hoyt Volker. He has a mercenary army that also controlled Vaas' activities. Jason decides to kill Hoyt. Huntley drops Jason off on Hoyt's Island and tells him to find another agent, Sam Becker. Sam Becker, who works undercover as a mercenary for Hoyt, helps Jason infiltrate Hoyt's organization. After Jason meets his brother Riley in his mansion, he works out a plan with Sam to free him and take out Hoyt. To do this, they allegedly lure him into a trap at a poker game, but Hoyt sees through Jason's and Sam's intentions and kills the latter. Then he attacks Jason, whom he is subject to in a duel. Thereupon he frees his brother Riley from an airfield, where he is held captive by the mercenaries.

When Jason and Riley want to return to their friends, they discover that Earnhardt's house has been attacked by the rakyat and that their friends have been taken to Citra's temple. Jason leaves immediately for the temple and is told by Citra to kill his friends and join their tribe. Here the player can choose whether to comply with Citra's request or to save his friends.

If he chooses the latter, Rogers tries to stab Jason for his refusal. However, Citra faces Jason and is fatally hit. Rogers leaves Jason, appalled by Citra's death. His friends leave the island with the ship that they have repaired in the meantime, but he stays behind on Rook Island. If he chooses the former, Jason and Citra have sexual intercourse. Thereupon Citra kills him because she considers his function for the tribe, the witness of a new leader, to be fulfilled.

Gameplay

General

The core element of the game is the single player campaign. In this it is the main goal of the player to free his friends from the hands of the pirates. In addition, he tries to eliminate the pirate leaders Vaas Montenegro and Hoyt Volker. The player achieves these goals in the form of successive missions. The respective objectives vary from just causing extensive damage to turning off individual targets to infiltrating enemy bases. Outside of these missions, however, the player can explore the game environment at any time without a specific objective.

In addition, Far Cry 3 has a multiplayer part . This includes a separate co-op campaign for up to four players as well as a skirmish mode, which consists of various entertaining types of operations with up to 16 players.

Game world

Far Cry 3 offers a freely accessible game world that consists of two fictional islands. Initially, only one of these islands is accessible, the one on which the player starts. At the start of the game, this is largely under the control of pirates. The pirates have several bases in the vicinity of which they regularly patrol. They also carry out attacks against civilians and Rakyat troops from time to time.

Unlike in Far Cry 2 , the player has the opportunity to conquer the enemy outposts. If he defeats the defending garrison, the post changes into the possession of the rakyat. The player can get weapons and equipment from exempted posts. Furthermore, he can use the fast travel function to travel to any position held by the rakyat at any time. A similar concept existed in the predecessor, but its scope was much more limited. Also some vehicles, including boats, gliders, trucks and cars, which are distributed in the game world, are available to the player for any use.

The game world offers various tasks apart from the campaign. There are numerous artifacts, letters from Japanese soldiers from the Second World War and memory cards that the player can collect while exploring. If the player collects these items in sufficient numbers, he has access to weapons that are above average. Some jobs, such as assassinations or animal hunts, are advertised at outposts.

In certain places, such as farms, the player also encounters civilians. These can also act as clients. They also offer the player various mini-games, including poker or knife throwing.

The player gains access to the second island as soon as he has defeated Vaas in the course of the main missions. The last main missions take place on this island. From then on, the player has the option of traveling between the two islands by fast travel or by boat. The action on the second island, which is under the control of mercenaries, is similar to the first. The player tries to free the island from mercenary rule and to kill the slave trader Hoyt Volker. In addition, the player has some additional options for his tactical approach, including the ability to infiltrate enemy posts using a mercenary uniform and a wingsuit .

struggle

Fights begin when the player comes into contact with enemy pirates. If the player approaches enemies, a display informs him of this. The display also informs you whether the opponents have spotted him.

The game supports a tactical approach in which the player can first mark opponents with a camera. This allows him to see the opponents including their line of sight on the minimap and can kill them undetected with long-range weapons or by takedown , a special attack movement, which is rewarded with additional experience points.

The bow is a new weapon in Far Cry 3

For combat situations, the player has numerous types of weapons to choose from, of which he can carry up to four depending on the level of equipment. These primarily include pistols , assault rifles, and machine guns . There are also rocket launchers , a flamethrower and a recurve bow to choose from. Grenades and Molotov cocktails are available to the player as weapons . In addition, the figure permanently carries a machete .

Most of the weapons are available to the player right from the start, but they have to be purchased. The player acquires the money required for this through orders, mini-games and looting . If the player frees radio towers that were provided with jammers by the pirates and thereby cut off the island from the outside world, the weapons are gradually given to him free of charge.

Character development

Far Cry 3 has some role-playing elements as a new feature . In this way, the player collects experience points that he can invest in new skills. These in turn give him advantages in combat. The skills are divided into three groups and can be unlocked in sequence by completing main missions.

In addition, based on role-playing games, the player has an extensive inventory in which he collects plants or animal skins. Plants can be harvested from most locations and are used to make syringes. With injections the player can heal injuries or improve certain skills for a short time. Animal skins obtained by hunting in the wild are used to make equipment such as a larger gun belt or a larger quiver.

user interface

The user interface is much more extensive than Far Cry 2 , which usually did not display any elements in the game. By default it shows a mini map, a display with the current number of life points, the number of healing syringes carried and an altimeter . If the player selects a weapon, the ammunition supply for this weapon is also displayed.

As in the previous version, the camera shows everything from the first person perspective . As a result, the player experiences the action from the eyes of the main character.

Development history

development

Ubisoft Montreal developed the main part of the game
Massive Entertainment designed the multiplayer mode

In 2009 an employee of Ubisoft Montreal mentioned for the first time that the studio had been working on a successor to Far Cry 2 for a long time . At this point the game was still in its early stages. A year later, the American magazine PC Gamer reported that the development was already at an advanced stage. An official announcement by Ubisoft was still missing. The Swedish sales platforms Game and Webhallen included the game in their program and announced a release for 2010. However, this did not take place.

The game was first demonstrated at E3 2011 in Los Angeles . As a development goal, Ubisoft Montreal stated the creation of a larger game world than in the predecessor, which should be much livelier. The developers wanted to compensate for a frequently criticized weakness of the predecessor, the lack of variety. Actions by the player should also have a more pronounced impact on the game world.

In a press release, Ubisoft stated September 6, 2012 as the expected release date. In the same communication, the company discussed the multiplayer part of the game. This was developed by the Swedish studio Massive Entertainment , which was responsible for the strategy game World in Conflict , among other things . In a short report, Ubisoft described the functions of the multiplayer mode. It would include game modes similar to Far Cry 2 and allow games with up to 16 players. Furthermore, an editor would be available to the players in order to develop their own multiplayer maps. According to Massive Entertainment, the multiplayer component of Far Cry 3 should be characterized by a cooperative team game.

In response to a request, the Swedish studio rejected the publication of modding programs, as the game's architecture was not designed for simple editing by third parties.

Jeffrey Yohalem designed the plot of the game

Ubisoft announced that it will conduct a closed beta test , an event where players can test an almost finished version of the game, for the multiplayer mode this summer . Access to this test project was given to winners of a competition and buyers of Ghost Recon: Future Soldiers , published by Ubisoft in May 2012 . In early June, Ubisoft announced that the game would receive a cooperative campaign, a campaign in which multiple players would complete missions together. At the end of June it was announced that the development of the game would be delayed and that the game would therefore be released in November at the earliest.

Many departments of Ubisoft worked on Far Cry 3 . Ubisoft Montreal developed the main components of the game. Massive Entertainment directed the development of the multiplayer mode. Ubisoft's Shanghai office designed the missions for the single player mode and the animals. The driver developer Reflections was commissioned to design the vehicles. Ubisoft Red Storm designed the user interface and participated in the planning and porting for the Windows platform. The Ubisoft studio in Bucharest was responsible for quality assurance.

The team of lead developers has been reorganized compared to Far Cry 2 . It was composed of Jamie Keen, Kevin Guillemette and Andrea Zanini. As sources of inspiration for some elements of the successor, Keen gave role-playing games and open-world games, such as Red Dead Redemption or Elder Scrolls . Dan Hay was executive producer.

The game plot was developed by Jeffrey Yohalem , who was previously involved as a writer on Assassin's Creed II and Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood . Yohalem based his designs on films like Pulp Fiction or Apocalypse Now . He stated that the main idea was that the game should show the effects of mutual killing on society. Violent sequences are not played down or integrated into a positive framework, but rather should encourage the players to question the processes. This is achieved, for example, by the fact that the character has no combat experience at the beginning and first has to teach himself to kill. Furthermore, the game would pick up on some common video game clichés, such as sexism or the frequent display of stereotypes , and comment on them in a satirical way. Hay said in an interview that the game would be more emotional than its predecessor. The key to this are the characters who are supposed to cast a spell over the player.

One of the author's concerns was to create a special bond between the player and his role. To do this, he resorted to the concept of method acting , a form of acting that is characterized by strong identification with the role played. The player should be able to perceive that his decisions in the game influence the game world and other characters. Yohalem also deliberately chose an average, inexperienced character as the main character rather than a trained soldier or agent. This should make it easier for players to empathize with the character.

technology

Exhibition at IgroMir 2012

From a technical point of view, Far Cry 3 is based on a modernized version of the Dunia engine known from its predecessor , which is characterized, among other things, by a detailed fire and weather simulation. In its updated version, it supports the DirectX 11 programming interface and offers some new graphics effects such as Alpha to Coverage , which improves the display of grasses and shrubs. Furthermore, the shaders and thus the rendering effects, especially the display of shadows, have been improved. This is done, for example, by obscuring the surroundings .

The artificial intelligence that guides the computer-controlled characters was developed to be based on the player's approach. It analyzes which tactics the player uses in an attack and reacts accordingly.

Sound and synchronization

Composer Brian Tyler

The game music was composed by Brian Tyler , who has worked in numerous films, including The Expendables and Battle: Los Angeles . It uses numerous electronic and dubstep effects and was released as a download on the music platforms Qobuz and iTunes .

In the English original, Elias Toufexis was originally intended for the role of Brody , who set the main character of Deus Ex: Human Revolution , Adam Jensen, to music. After the Deus-Ex game was released, Toufexis was replaced by another spokesman, as Ubisoft wanted to avoid both characters sounding too similar.

Protagonist Jason Brody is spoken in the German dubbing by Gerrit Schmidt-Foss , who among others lends his voice to Leonardo DiCaprio . The leader of the pirate gang will be dubbed by Simon Jäger , the dubbing voices by Matt Damon and Heath Ledger . The film sequence at the beginning of the game was underlaid with the title Paper Planes by the singer MIA .

publication

On November 29, 2012, the game was released in Europe and Australia. The day before, Ubisoft held a promotional event in Sydney where visitors could play Laser Tag for free . It was released in North America on December 4th. When it was released, the game appeared in a normal and a limited edition, which was named Insane Edition . This included some additional content for the game, a bag, a wobbly figure of the antagonist and other extras. Pre-orderers also received additions in the form of missions, weapons or weapon paint. The exact design of the additions varied between the individual providers.

A first patch to fix stability problems in multiplayer mode was released on the day of publication . In January 2013, Ubisoft released a free expansion called High Tides that added additional missions for the multiplayer campaign to the PlayStation 3 version of the game. At the beginning of February, the package was also submitted for the Windows version.

In early 2013, the game was also released in Japan. The Japanese version received some censorship because the original version was deemed too brutal by the Japanese authorities.

A website went live on April 1st promoting a game called Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon . Previously, Yves Guillemot , the CEO of Ubisoft, mentioned that a new Far Cry project was in the works. In the days that followed, screenshots and other material for the upcoming title appeared. On April 11, Ubisoft finally confirmed that Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon was in the works. In terms of content, it would have no connection to the base game and would be played in the 1980s. May 1st of the same year was given as the expected release date. In June of the same year, Ubisoft announced that a film based on Far Cry 3 was in the works.

Reviews

Far Cry 3 received largely positive reviews from the trade press. The ratings for the individual platforms were quite similar. The online database Metacritic , which collects and evaluates test reports, calculated between 88 and 91% for the individual implementations.

Mitch Dyer of the online magazine IGN described Far Cry 3 as very successful on all platforms. The plot and the development of the main character are staged convincingly. Another strength of the game is the exceptional freedom of action of the players, which is evident both when exploring the island and in battle sequences. However, these strengths are neglected in the multiplayer mode.

In a review of the Swiss magazine Inside Games cut Far Cry 3 thoroughly. The author, who tested the PlayStation version, praised the detailed game world, and the design of the plot and the characters. However, the individual missions are structured too linearly. The author also criticized the hunting tasks, which are too numerous and thus seem forced. Overall, the technical side of the game is convincing. The graphics are of high quality. This is particularly evident in the representation of nature and fire. Only edge flicker is a problem. The German dubbed version was also very successful, but it is particularly uncomfortable in cutscenes that the characters are not lip-synched.

In a test by Eurogamer magazine , the PlayStation 3 version received the highest rating of 10 points. Author Tom Bramwell described Far Cry 3 as Ubisoft's best game since Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, which was released in 2010 . The game world is worked out in detail and looks very lively. In terms of play, the battles for the outposts are the highlight of Far Cry 3 due to the multiple types of tactics that the player can use . The open campaign missions are also convincing. The game also scores with an extensive arsenal of weapons, an appealing multiplayer mode and a map editor. Alexander Bohn-Elias from the German-language branch of Eurogamer awarded one point less in a test of the Windows version. However, this was not related to the platform. Rather, minor handling and balancing weaknesses as well as the storage system prevented a top rating.

Spiegel author Carsten Görig praised Far Cry 3 for giving chaos a free hand. This results in new situations for the player that challenge him again and again. In this way, the game manages to remain captivating over a long period of time. The plot takes a back seat in the background. Irritating, however, are the fights against the main opponents, which are poor as pure reaction tests.

1UP's Bob Mackey gave it a lower rating than most other magazines. He primarily criticized the design of the campaign, which seemed implausible and inappropriate. It is too short and, in contrast to the other elements of the game, leaves the player too few options for action. The development of the character is also not very convincing. The opportunities to acquire skills are too strongly linked to progress in the game plot. This is also too easy, so that the actual concept of such a tree, specializing its figure, does not develop any attraction. Another shortcoming is the multiplayer component, which is too scarce.

Benjamin Schmädig from 4Players also criticized Far Cry 3 . He wrote that the game was designed too superficially. It is not very convincing that the game wants to offer an extensive and engaging plot on the one hand, and an open-world concept on the other. This puts the plot too much in the background. Also, some mini-games and side tasks seem rather disturbing than meaningfully integrated, since neither a reference to the story is made nor these games are integrated in any other way. So in the end there is no real feeling of playing. The game offers outstanding elements, especially in combat. In the case of the console versions, the author also criticized deficiencies in the graphic display, such as blurring and screen tearing .

action

The plot of Far Cry 3 received special attention in the press . Achim Fehrenbach von der Zeit described Yohalem's approach of using the principle of method acting and combining the plot closely with the development of the main character as interesting, because it differentiates the game from other well-known games. Ludwig Jovanovic from the Rheinische Post praised the staging of the main opponent Vaas, who was both fascinating and terrifying. Jochen Gebauer from GameStar described Vaas as a sincere pathological psychopath who is a real asset to the game.

John Walker of British online magazine Rock, Paper, Shotgun praised the fact that the main character was developing noticeably. It is also worth mentioning that the character often questions the approach, killing the opponent, in the cutscenes. The plot also integrates well into the game. The implementation of the local rakyat was less successful. Elements that are based on spiritual rites such as voodoo seemed arduous and implausible. They also seem helpless and weak without the player's intervention, which is a sign of racism. Furthermore, there are too many stereotypical literary characters in the game, such as the noble savage in the form of Jason. The use of secondary characters who are not properly integrated into the plot is also not very successful. As an example, the author cites the character Bambi Hughes, who, although the acting is convincing and initially interesting, ultimately appears too superficial.

Kirk Hamilton of Kotaku described the plot as shallow. A big problem is that it seems inconsistent. Many elements of the plot, such as the serious background, the CIA agents and the regularly relaxed demeanor of Jason's friends don't go well together. Furthermore, the plot is simply implausible in many places, as it tends to lead to incomprehensible developments. This explains neither Jason's rapid development as a soldier, nor the local people's need for help, nor the fight against Vaas to a sufficient degree.

Mata Haggis from Gamasutra evaluated reviews of Far Cry 3 and found that no magazine responded to the satire constructed by Yohalem. He wrote that the problem with the plot was that the satirical-exaggerated elements of the narrative were not clearly recognizable. Part of this is because the game mechanics are also very unrealistic. As a result, the plot fades into the background so that the exaggerated sequences are not noticeable. Furthermore, the topics that the game tries to address, such as sexism and gender roles , are already taken for granted in most other video games. This also makes the satire difficult to recognize for gamers.

In an interview, the plot author Jeffrey Yohalem commented on the critical voices. He rejected the allegations of simplicity and racism and said that Far Cry 3 was intended to exaggerate controversial issues and thereby stimulate discussion on these issues. For the fact that these discussions developed into criticism of the plot of the game, he saw a lack of examination of the players with the narrative and its statements as the cause. This would prevent them from recognizing or misunderstanding the messages. Nor would they try to combine the numerous allusions made in the game. He gave examples of the naming of the setting or quotes from Alice in Wonderland , which are regularly visible on menu screens. Yohalem saw the reason for this in the fact that players are used to the fact that the plot plays a subordinate role in games. Therefore it is regularly not designed to be analyzed and interpreted.

Sales figures

According to Ubisoft, Far Cry 3 is one of the group's top-selling games. Around 850,000 units were sold in North America in the first month of sales. It was ranked sixth across all platforms in statistics from the NPD Group . In January it moved up to second place. The game was similarly successful in Europe. In the UK, the game finished fourth in mid-January.

4.5 million units had been sold worldwide by February. In the middle of the year the game reached more than six million sales. In October 2014, the publisher reported that Far Cry 3 had sold ten million copies.

Awards

In addition to the numerous positive reviews, Far Cry 3 has been nominated for a number of awards, some of which it has also won. The prizes won include awards from leading game magazines such as IGN, awards from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts and the International Game Developers Association .

Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon

On April 30, 2013, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon was released in North America. Despite its name, the game has no links to Far Cry 3 in terms of content . Instead, it takes place in 2007 in a dystopian world after a nuclear war . The framework story is about the American soldier Rex Colt, equipped with cybernetic implants, who is sent to a remote island to kill the criminal agent Colonel Sloan.

In a playful way, the game takes over some elements of Far Cry 3 , including the freely accessible game world, the conquest of bases and the many collectable items. The role play components have either been taken over in a greatly simplified manner or have been completely removed.

Blood Dragon received a positive response from the trade press. The scenario, which is characterized by numerous parodies of comics and action films from the 80s, received frequent attention. Carsten Görig from Spiegel wrote that the multi-layered allusions are appealing.

Far Cry 4

Far Cry 4 logo

In November 2014, Far Cry 4, a successor to the concept of its predecessor, was released. The player takes on the role of Ajay Ghale, who fights against the self-proclaimed King Pagan Min in the fictional land of Kyrat in the Himalayas . He is supported by the “Golden Path”, a local rebel group.

Also Far Cry 4 received by the press mostly positive reviews. Testers praised the large and lively game world. However, some authors criticized the strong similarity to the predecessor and criticized a comparatively weak plot.
