Jean Gaspard Édouard Beugniot (born February 12, 1822 in Masmünster , † October 25, 1878 in Mulhouse ) was a French engineer and locomotive builder .

Life

Beugniot, son of Jean Claude Beugniots (treasurer of the spinning mill of Nicolas Koechlin (1781–1852) in Masmünster) and his wife Henriette nee. Berger-Pfeffel, left Masmünster in 1837 and began an apprenticeship as a locksmith in the foundry of the Societé André Koechlin & Cie in Mulhouse .

In 1844 Beugniot became head of the locomotive department of Societé André Koechlin & Cie , and in 1846 André Koechlin promoted him to engineer. Around 1860 he developed what is known as the Beugniot lever to improve the locomotives' cornering ability. This lever was installed in two locomotives of the Compagnie des chemins de fer de Paris à Lyon et à la Méditerranée , with which test drives were then carried out on the Swiss Central Railway under the supervision of the engineer Niklaus Riggenbach .

After the Societé André Koechlin & Cie had been transferred to the Elsässische Maschinenbau-Gesellschaft Grafenstaden , Beugniot managed their locomotive plant in Mulhouse. In 1872 he succeeded in persuading Alfred de Glehn to collaborate in his work. In 1878 de Glehn became Beugniot's successor.

The Beugniot lever was used in Germany in the class 82 locomotives of the Deutsche Bundesbahn, the class 105 and 106 of the Deutsche Reichsbahn, and in locomotives from Maschinenbau Kiel .
