The Estadio Miguel Alemán Valdés is a football stadium in Celaya , the third largest city in the Mexican state of Guanajuato . It is named after the former Mexican President Miguel Alemán Valdés , who ruled the country from 1946 to 1952. Originally it was called Estadio de la Unidad Deportiva Municipal .

history

The stadium opened on September 12, 1954 and served as the home ground for Celaya FC when it started in the Segunda División in 1954/55 . After the club rose to the Primera División in 1958 , the stadium was the first venue for first division matches until the club was relegated to the second division three years later.

The stadium was later used again for seven and a half years after the club Atlético Celaya , which was created in 1994 as a result of a merger, rose straight away to the first division, where it played between the summer of 1995 and the end of 2002. In its first season in the upper house of football, Atlético even reached the finals of the Mexican football championship straight away, so that the Estadio Miguel Alemán Valdés hosted a Mexican championship final on May 1, 1996 for the first and so far only time. The game against Necaxa ended 1-1 and because the second leg in the Aztec Stadium in Mexico City went goalless, Necaxa won the championship due to the away goals rule that applied this year .

In addition, the stadium, which can hold around 23,369 spectators, has a long tradition as a venue for matches in the second division , in which, in addition to the two clubs mentioned, Tecnológico de Celaya (between 1972 and 1978) and Linces de Celaya (1991-1993) played.

After the license sale by Atlético in late 2002, Celaya FC was revived. The club has been playing in the Liga de Ascenso since the 2011/12 season .
