CinePaint (formerly Film Gimp ) was professional graphics software for film editing. Since code from different open source projects was incorporated into the development of CinePaint , the source texts are accordingly published inconsistently under different free licenses ( GPL , LGPL , BSD , MPL ).
CinePaint allows entire series of images to be edited in one process. It also supports color depths of 8, 16 and 32 bit ( HDR ) per color channel - far more than can be displayed on a normal monitor . This makes this program of interest to photographers in addition to its actual purpose in the film industry. Thanks to the integrated color management , CMYK and CIE * Lab images can be displayed and corrected. From version 0.20 it is possible to calculate HDR images from normal bracketing . Raw data formats from digital cameras are read in using Dcraw , alternatively there is a UFRaw plug-in.
In addition to Rhythm & Hues , the Sony Pictures Imageworks , ILM and DreamWorks studios contribute source code to the project.
history
The software has been the source of the image editing program GIMP (1.0.x, 1998) derived . Silicon Grail , later bought by Apple , and Rhythm & Hues took over the programming to get a replacement for the recently abandoned Adobe Photoshop for Silicon Graphics IRIX . This programming contribution was not included in the GIMP. The film industry then decided to develop a spin-off called "Film Gimp". The project was later renamed "CinePaint". The project has not been further developed since 2009.
