Scooby-Doo is a successful American animated series that was produced by Hanna-Barbera especially for the " Saturday Morning Cartoons " and ran there for a long time. Over the years there have been many different characters that differed in age and appearance. The most popular cast includes the talking Great Dane Scooby-Doo and four detectives: Fred Jones , Daphne Blake , Velma Dinkley and Norville "Shaggy" Rogers .
The Mystery Inc. , consisting of these five characters, drives their van , the Mystery Machine , around the world. Their jobs are to resolve puzzling events, and so they often become observers of ghost appearances and other supernatural phenomena. At the end of each episode it comes to light that there is a rational explanation for these phenomena . Most of the time, this is caused by criminals or guys who don't want nosy people to bother with their business. The only exception is the video series, in which the Mystery Inc. has to deal with real monsters and phenomena, such as in Scooby-Doo and the aliens , where aliens actually appear, but as friends and not as opponents. Other exceptions include Scooby-Doo and the Ghost Island and Scooby-Doo and the witch's secret .
In the later versions of Scooby-Doo , other characters appear who also act as protagonists, such as Scooby's cousin Scooby-Dum or his nephew Scrappy-Doo .
The original show aired on CBS from 1969 to 1976 and later on ABC . Scooby-Doo is currently broadcast in the United States and many other countries on Cartoon Network or Boomerang .
In October 2004, Scooby-Doo received the Guinness World Record for most episodes of an American animated series. The Simpsons previously held this record , but they recaptured it from 2005.
In 2013, the American program guide TV Guide declared Scooby Doo the fifth best animated series of all time.
On March 29, 2018, The CW aired Scoobynatural , a crossover episode of Scooby-Doo and Supernatural . This became possible because both series are produced by Warner Bros.
history
The beginnings
In 1968, many Americans began to get upset that there was too much violence in Saturday morning cartoons . Most of these series were action films such as Spider-Man , Space Ghost or Speed Racer , many of which were withdrawn from the program in the late 1960s due to these protests . CBS board member Fred Silverman, who was especially concerned with the children's program, was now looking for a suitable program to revive his line-up for the Saturday morning and at the same time soothe the hearts of the strict Americans. The result was The Archie Show , a series about the heroes of the Archie Comics . In addition to the animated series, the music of the Archies was also very successful, the song Sugar Sugar came on the market in 1969, and was able to stay at number 1 in the US and European charts for a long time . Silverman then contacted producers William Hanna and Joseph Barbera to persuade them to create another animated series about a teenage rock band, but which was supposed to solve puzzles and secrets between appearances.
Hanna and Barbera passed this proposal on to their story writers Joe Ruby and Ken Spears , as well as character designer Iwao Takamoto . The original concept of the show was titled Mysteries Five and included the five teenagers Geoff, Mike, Kelly, Linda , and Linda's brother WW , as well as their dog Too Much . They were all members of The Mysteries Five , even the dog that played bongos . In their spare time, the group solved spooky puzzles using ghosts , undead, and other supernatural creatures. Ruby and Spears disagreed on whether the dog should become a big clumsy Great Dane or a shaggy German Shepherd . Joseph Barbera ultimately decided on the mastiff.
Takamoto met with a Great Dane breeder to learn more about the characters of these dogs. When drawing the character Too Much , he broke every rule, he gave the dog black dots that normally no mastiff has, curved legs, a double chin and other idiosyncrasies.
Just before the new series was released, Silverman began to change a few things. Geoff and Mike became one person Ronnie (later renamed Fred ), Kelly became Daphney (later Daphne ), Linda became Velma , and Shaggy (formerly WW ) was no longer her brother. Silverman was also not very happy with the name Mysteries Five and quickly changed it to Who's SS-Scared? . The CBS board found the previously animated sequences to be too scary for a young audience and decided not to publish the series.
But since Silverman wanted the series in the block of the upcoming "Saturday morning cartoons", he went to Ruby and Spears, who were in the process of making the show more fun and less terrifying. The rock band element was also removed from the series, and efforts were made to focus more on Shaggy and Too Much. Furthermore, it was decided to rename the dog Scooby-Doo , and subsequently the whole show Scooby Doo, Where are You! to call. CBS agreed to show the series to viewers.
Scooby-Doo on TV
CBS years (1969-1975)
On September 13, 1969, Scooby Doo, Where are You! ( Scooby Doo, where are you! ) With the first episode What a Night for a Knight ( Haunted Museum ) on the air on CBS. In 1969, seventeen episodes of Scooby-Doo were produced.
The series was a success for CBS, and so the show was renewed for a second season and now put more emphasis on slapstick humor. The eight episodes that went on air in 1970 already included the characteristic chase music during the more hectic scenes.
In 1972, after twenty-five half-hour episodes, the program was expanded to a full hour and was now called The New Scooby-Doo Movies . Various stars had guest appearances in each episode, including the Harlem Globetrotters , The Three Stooges , Batman and Robin or Laurel and Hardy . These helped the group to resolve the strange events. After two seasons with a total of twenty-four episodes (1972 to 1974), the original show was repeated until Scooby-Doo switched to Network ABC .
Scooby clones
Due to the success, Hanna-Barbera decided to produce more programs that should be similar to the concept of Scooby-Doo. So in 1970 " Josie and the Pussycats ", 1972 "The Flintstone Comedy Show" ( The Flintstone Comedy Hour ) and 1971 "The Funky Phantom".
Other programs about young people who solve unusual cases, mostly with the help of a pet, would be u. a .:
- 1972: The Amazing Chan and the Chan Clan
- 1973: Goober and the Ghost Chasers, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kids, Inch High, Private Eye
- 1976: Clue Club, Jabberjaw
- 1977: Captain Caveman and the Teen Angels
- 1978: Buford and the Galloping Ghost
After Joe Ruby and Ken Spears left Hanna-Barbera in 1977 and started Ruby-Spears Productions , their first animation production was another Scooby clone called Fangface.
During the 1970s these clones did very well alongside the original Scooby-Doo in the morning program. All series produced before 1975 were broadcast on CBS, but when Silverman switched to ABC he took the mystery series, including Scooby-Doo.
ABC years (1976-1991)
On ABC the show was changed a bit almost every year. Between 1976 and 1977 Scooby-Doo was combined with the new Hanna Barbera show "Dynomutt, Dog Wonder" to create the Scooby-Doo / Dynomutt lesson . Later more series were added and one hour became several. Scooby's All-Star Laff-a-Lympics from 1977/1978, Scooby's All-Stars from 1978/1979.
New episodes in the format of the original Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? Shows were produced, and Scooby-Doo got company with his somewhat dumb cousin, Scooby-Dum . After three seasons of the show in was The Scooby-Doo Show ( The Scooby-Doo Show ) renamed and continue to broadcast.
In 1979, Scooby's nephew, Scrappy-Doo, was added to the series in an effort to boost the falling audience . The 1979/1980 episodes were called Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo , and with interest in the show again, the entire series was overtaken and focused more on Scrappy-Doo. Fred, Daphne and Velma were removed from the series, and the Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo show was now three seven-minute comic adventures by Scooby, Scrappy and Shaggy instead of half an hour of ghost hunting.
Daphne returned for The All-New Scooby and Scrappy-Doo Show , and the now twenty-two-minute show was somewhat reminiscent of the first season of Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? . This version lasted two seasons, with the second season running under the name The New Scooby-Doo Mysteries . Fred and Velma also had a few guest appearances here.
In Germany, The Scooby-Doo Show was first broadcast on Sat. 1 in May 1985 and shortly thereafter also Scooby and Scrappy-Doo . The Scooby-Doo show was then repeated several times on Sat.
In 1985, the debut year of was The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo ( The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo ). The main characters were Daphne, Shaggy, Scooby, Scrappy and the new characters Flim-Flam and Vincent Van Ghoul , dubbed by and based on Vincent Price . The team's job was to catch the thirteen most terrifying ghosts in the world. In 1986 the series was discontinued after thirteen episodes and no new version of Scooby-Doo was created for two years .
Hanna-Barbera was the characters of the original series in 1988 as a high school -Students for A Pup Named Scooby-Doo ( A Pup Named Scooby-Doo ) back to life. This series was somewhat reminiscent of the classic cartoons by Tex Avery and Bob Clampett . The drawing style of the original was avoided to create a Looney Tunes style. The show lasted until 1991.
The Kids' WB years (2002–2008)
Reruns of the various versions of Scooby-Doo were shown on various channels in the United States, but after some channels withdrew the Hanna Barbera films from their programs, Scooby-Doo became the property of Cartoon Network and its sister broadcaster Boomerang .
In 2002, following the success of the reruns on Cartoon Network and the sale of the Scooby-Doo videos, the original characters were updated for the 21st century, and What's New, Scooby-Doo? was broadcast on Cartoon Network and WB Network. This series goes back to the tradition of the original series. The team consists of the original characters, and it goes on the hunt for monsters in the familiar manner, whereby the monsters are always criminals in disguise. Only the appearance has been slightly modernized compared to the original series. What's New, Scooby-Doo? was broadcast from September 2002 to July 2006 in a total of 42 episodes. The theme song from What's New, Scooby-Doo? was recorded by the Canadian music group Simple Plan .
At the beginning of 2008, Kabel Eins launched its tenth series offshoot Scooby-Doo on a hot track ( Shaggy & Scooby-Doo Get a Clue! ). In the USA between 2006 and 2008 a total of 26 episodes were produced and broadcast in two seasons. In this branch, Shaggy inherits money and an estate from his uncle Albert Shaggleford. He is an inventor, but has to hide from his enemies who want to steal his secret invention. Fred, Daphne and Velma are usually not part of this offshoot, but do appear in a few episodes to support Shaggy and Scooby.
The Cartoon Network Years (2010-present)
An eleventh offshoot was presented in the form of Mission Scooby-Doo ( Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated ) by Warner Bros. Animation, the pilot episode ran on April 5, 2010 on US television, the complete first season includes a total of 26 episodes. In Mission Scooby-Doo , as in the previous three offshoots, the focus was on a slightly different design of the characters, but this time a little more sophisticated, they wanted to remember the earlier years in the form of a retro look. In addition, Mission Scooby-Doo is darker, more violent and much more realistic than the previous series offshoot. Individual episodes are linked to one another and a cross-episode plot emerged. In Germany, the series began broadcasting on February 27, 2012 on the pay-TV channel Cartoon Network . In the US, the second season was announced at the end of March 2012, so the first episode ran in advance on March 30, 2012 on Cartoon Network Videos, an online branch. Warner Bros. announced that the official start of the second season will be postponed to July 30, 2012.
On February 25, 2013, Cartoon Network announced that the Scooby-Doo mission was completed with Season 2, and new episodes of the offshoot were not planned, it said.
On March 10, 2014, Cartoon Network announced that it would produce numerous new series based on old cartoons, including the twelfth Scooby-Doo offshoot. Stay Cool, Scooby-Doo! ( Be cool, Scooby-Doo! ). The series will feature the well-known Scooby gang, who just finished their senior year of high school. They plan their last summer together and travel across the country with the Mystery Machine, but on their way they are always stopped by monsters and other disasters.
Originally, the series was to be broadcast on the US television channel Boomerang , which, in addition to Cartoon Network, also belongs to the TimeWarner media company . Still, stay cool, Scooby-Doo! on October 6, 2015, like Mission Scooby-Doo before, on Cartoon Network. So far 20 episodes have been broadcast, paused since March 2016 Stay cool, Scooby-Doo! . On March 7, 2017, Time Warner announced that the rest of the episodes will be available through Boomerang's SVOD offering . Of the remaining 26 episodes, however, only 15 episodes were available through the SVOD service; the last 11 episodes were broadcast in March 2018. The final installment of Keep Cool Scooby-Doo! ran on March 18, 2018 on Boomerang TV. In 2019 the remake Scooby-Doo and who are you? .
Movies and videos
Television films
Between 1986 and 1988 Hanna-Barbera produced Superstars 10 , a series of television films starring her most popular characters, such as Yogi Bear , Huckleberry Hound , the Flintstones and the Jetsons . Scooby-Doo, Scrappy-Doo, and Shaggy appeared in three of these films: Scooby-Doo Meets the Boo Brothers (1987, Scooby-Doo and the Boo Brothers ), Scooby-Doo and the Reluctant Werewolf (1988, Scooby-Doo and the unruly werewolf ), and Scooby-Doo and the Ghoul School (1989, Scooby-Doo and the Ghost School ). Scooby-Doo and Shaggy also narrated the television-produced Arabian Nights , which later also aired as Scooby-Doo in Arabian Nights .
In 2009, Scooby-Doo came out! The Mystery Begins ( Scooby-Doo! The Adventure Begins ) on television, similar to the movies with actors. In 2010 the sequel Scooby-Doo! Curse of the Lake Monster ( Scooby-Doo! The Curse of the Lake Monster ).
Video films
From 1998 Hanna-Barbera (here already as a subsidiary of Warner Bros. ) produced Scooby-Doo video films, which should now appear annually as direct-to-video. In the film series, Fred, Shaggy, Daphne, Velma and Scooby-Doo actually fight real monsters and have to deal with real phenomena. Scooby-Doo and Ghost Island , the first direct-to-video film, is bringing Mystery Inc. back together after losing sight of each other for several years. In Scooby-Doo and the Witch's Secret , Mystery Inc. meets a writer who invites them to his hometown. But once there, the friends find that the city is haunted by an ancestor of the writer who was a real witch. This film also introduced the Hex Girls , a three-girl Gothic band that has been a recurring part of the Scooby-Doo franchise ever since .
Scooby-Doo and the Cyber-Hunt was Hanna-Barbera's last production before the studio was completely taken over by Warner Bros. Since then, Warner Bros. Animation has produced the annual films and new TV series offshoots alone.
The video series continued with Scooby-Doo! and the Legend of the Vampire (2003, Scooby-Doo - Adventure on Vampire Rock ), Scooby-Doo! and the Monster of Mexico (2003, Scooby-Doo and the Monster of Mexico ), Scooby-Doo! and the Loch Ness Monster (2004, Scooby-Doo and the Loch Ness Monster ), and Aloha, Scooby-Doo! (2005). In the meantime, well over 20 video films have been released, which continue to be published at irregular times, most recently Lego Scooby-Doo! Blowout Beach Bash in July 2017.
