Zattoo is an internet television and video-on-demand platform. The company, founded in 2005, employs over 170 people and is headquartered in Zurich as well as further locations in Berlin and Ann Arbor (USA).

Users in Switzerland and Germany can watch around 350 public, private and international television channels as well as a large number of video-on-demand content via Zattoo . Zattoo is available on almost all end devices, including smart TVs, PCs and laptops, streaming players as well as smartphones and tablets. In Germany and Switzerland, a basic offer of the service can be used free of charge after prior registration ("Zattoo Free"). In addition to free use, Zattoo also offers paid subscriptions ( Zattoo Premium and Zattoo Ultimate ) with access to HD and Full HD channels, time-shifted television and EU-wide streaming . With “Zattoo Premium” the user has several HD channels, up to two parallel streams, live pause and the restart function at their disposal. Since May 2018, there has also been another paid offer with Zattoo Ultimate . In addition to the existing offer, there is a selection of full HD channels, 100 recordings and up to four parallel streams.

Zattoo has also been running its own B2B business since 2012 and makes its technology available to media companies and network operators worldwide as an international TV-as-a-service platform.

The Swiss media group Tamedia has held a stake in Zattoo since 2008 and has held over 50 percent since 2019.

End customer business ("Zattoo B2C")

With around 20 million registered users, Zattoo is the largest television streaming provider in Europe. PCs and laptops with common browsers such as Google Chrome , Safari or Mozilla Firefox as well as mobile applications for iOS , Android and Windows are supported . Zattoo also offers TV applications for Internet-connected TVs from Samsung and Panasonic and for TVs with Android TV . Zattoo is also available via Xbox One and streaming players such as Amazon Fire TV , Apple TV and Google Chromecast .

In addition to restarting current programs (Restart), Zattoo also offers a replay function. With this function, the entire television program for the last seven days is available on demand and can be used with both a Premium and Ultimate subscription. The restart function allows broadcasts from public broadcasters to be restarted , as well as certain private broadcasting groups such as RTL and ProSiebenSat.1 . It is available to all users with Premium and Ultimate subscriptions and, for individual private broadcasters, also with the free basic tariff. A restart is not available for individual channels and programs for licensing reasons. For users of the paid Ultimate subscription, there is also a recording function with which up to 100 programs can be saved in the recording list. Since the beginning of January 2018, as a result of a new EU directive that abolishes national borders for streaming content (portability regulation), users of Zattoo Germany can also receive German television in other EU countries via Zattoo.

Corporate customers ("Zattoo B2B")

In the area with corporate customers, Zattoo has been offering completely hosted and managed over-the-top content (streaming independent of the Internet service provider) and IP-based television transmission for network operators and media companies, live and as video on demand, including encoding, transcoding, Multi- DRM (usage control) and storage through to playout as well as the end customer applications (“TV-as-a-service approach”, analogous to the SaaS approach). The focus is on a white label product with standard applications for all relevant end devices. All services are end-to-end solutions. It currently serves 30 business customers from Europe and the USA who use Zattoo's technical infrastructure and who in turn have several million end customers.

history

Zattoo is considered a pioneer in the field of television streaming. The company, which was founded in Switzerland, started its service on the occasion of the 2006 soccer World Cup and initially with four free Swiss TV channels. The network entered the publicly usable development stage in December 2006 and has been available in Germany since September 2007. There were initially 22 channels available, including Comedy Central , Das Vierte , CNN International , DMAX and MTV . The Zattoo client was developed for the Windows and macOS operating systems and can be downloaded free of charge. The transmissions took place according to the P2PTV principle via a peer-to-peer network. The Linux client that was initially available has been discontinued. In Switzerland, the use of Zattoo was free and legal, despite the availability of several private broadcasters. Since September 1, 2008, the Swiss Federal Office of Communications has also been collecting the fees for radio and television reception from Internet users. Tamedia also took a stake in the company this year . In Germany, the public broadcasters and Zattoo have agreed after long negotiations on a one-year test phase for their entire range of programs via Zattoo. The public television channels, some smaller private channels and 20 radio programs have been distributed via the German version of Zattoo since April 1, 2008. After the test phase had expired, continued broadcasting was initially tolerated. In April 2011, however, upon request, the “Program Directorate - Viewers' Editing Das Erste” confirmed by email that a corresponding cooperation agreement would exist between ARD and Zattoo.

The content, which was originally only available via the proprietary software of the same name, has also been able to be played back directly via the web browser as HTML5 video streams in the H.264 standard since April 2009 . At the end of 2009, the peer-to-peer principle was abolished because the DSL connections were too slow to upload. It was switched to a direct server stream from Zattoo. After starting with program transfers for desktop PCs, Zattoo has expanded its availability. With Zattoo you can watch TV on computers, smartphones and tablets (iOS, Android, Windows 10). Since the beginning of 2011, reception has also been possible on mobile devices. Since August 2011 also on internet-connected televisions as well as numerous streaming boxes and game consoles (Samsung Smart TV, Xbox One, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Android TV and supports streaming via Apple Air Play and Chromecast).

The first premium pay-TV offer started with Zattoo + in September 2011. In June 2012, Zattoo broadcast the European Football Championship 2012 live on the Internet , as did the offers from the public broadcasters ARD and ZDF .

In Germany, the programs of Mediengruppe RTL Deutschland (RTL, RTL II, VOX, Super RTL and n-tv) were activated on June 13, 2013 and Sport1 on January 29, 2014. After the ProSieben-Sat1 Group was included in the Zattoo offer in April 2014, the prices for the premium subscription were more than doubled due to the increased license costs. In Switzerland these channels remained free.

Since November 2015, in addition to real-time television programs, Zattoo Germany has also been offering video-on-demand from ProSiebenSat.1 , Studio Hamburg , Spiegel TV and BBC .

Zattoo has been offering advertisers personalized advertising since March 2017: With the help of the dynamic ad insertion process, advertising blocks are cut out of the live stream of television programs and refilled in real time via the ad server. H. For the first time, linear TV commercials are being replaced in unicast by frame-accurate digital spots. On January 28, 2019, Zattoo took over the end customer business from Magine TV Germany, which is discontinuing its television streaming service in Germany. 150,000 affected users receive a welcome offer to switch to Zattoo.

In April 2019, the Federal Competition Commission (Weko) and the Federal Cartel Office in Germany approved the takeover of Zattoo by Tamedia AG . This is now allowed to increase its stake to over 50%, after joining Zattoo in 2015 with 39.4 percent. When joining in 2015, it was discussed with Zattoo, according to Tamedia AG, that a takeover would be aimed for by 2021. Tamedia AG hopes that the takeover will enable the platform to grow and help shape the streaming market. Zattoo founder Bea Knecht also sees the takeover positively, with the takeover the partnership would enter the next phase.

Switzerland

The following channels are available in Switzerland. Some channels (HD, Zattoo +, Erotic, Bosnian, Croatian, Polish, Turkish, Portuguese and Serbian channels) are only available with the appropriate subscription.

In contrast to Wilmaa or Teleboy , which according to their terms and conditions also make the Swiss offer available in Liechtenstein, Liechtenstein is not explicitly supported by Zattoo.

Awards

In June 2017, Chip.de awarded Zattoo Premium with the highest number of points and the best price-performance ratio in a comparison of five paid streaming services. Zattoo Free was also given a “very good” rating in a list of free streaming services .

In 2020, Zattoo received the Emmy Award for Technology and Engineering from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS). Zattoo received the award in the category “Pioneering Development of Large Scale, Cloud Served, Broadcast Quality, Linear Channel Transmission to Consumers” and is honored for its pioneering development in the field of mass-market, cloud-based television transmission technologies.
