history

When another program was created in the first few months of 2009 with the emergence of Rai 4 , Rai was already thinking of an additional fifth station. After the management of Rai 5 had already been established on April 27, 2010, the political party Lega Nord asked the management of Rai 5 whether they would stabilize central production in Milan. Lega Nord also wanted Rai 5 to be the channel for Expo 2015 . The latter was agreed by Paolo Garimberti, the President of the Rai. However, he also said that Rai 5 would not become a North-only program. For a brief moment it was thought that Rai 5 would go on air in April 2010, but then the start of broadcasting was postponed to a fixed date, November 26, 2010.

As November 26, 2010 approached, a spot was shown on all Rai programs that was supposed to show the new world of Rai 5. The first program to go on air was Africa Benedetta with Benedetta Mazzini. On December 7th 2010, Rai 5 showed Richard Wagner's "La valchiria" ( Die Walküre ) live. On August 23, 2011, the channel showed the prime-time show by David Letterman , which was previously shown on Sky Uno and Rai Sat.
