Wilmaa is software for broadcasting television channels over the Internet . It was developed by programmers in Zurich and, for licensing reasons, only works in Switzerland and Liechtenstein . Wilmaa initially started with 22 channels. The range has now grown to over 260 channels. Registration is required for paid use of the streaming service. Anyone who uses the Wilmaa offer free of charge only has access to the advertising-financed live program of all channels. There are no advertisements for paying users and they get access to the programs of the last seven days ("Replay TV") via order. In addition, paying users also receive the full range of channels in higher resolution and have the option of pausing programs on one device and continuing to watch them on another device at the same point (“cloud pause”).

Wilmaa was launched in 2008 as the world's first purely browser-based television. Wilmaa was founded by Thomas Gabathuler. At that time the developers operated under the name “Solutionpark”. The trigger for the idea was the European Championship in 2008. Gabathuler wanted to offer users free television so that they could watch every game in their browser . When the European Championship came to an end, Wilmaa should be hired again. However, since the number of users rose to 100,000 within a month and wanted to continue using Wilmaa, Wilmaa remained a permanent provider platform for web television offers. Shortly afterwards, the Goldbach Group became a partner and took over the marketing of the advertising.
In May 2009, Wilmaa offered its first mobile app in the Apple iTunes store . In the following August, the premium offer came on the market. In 2010, the Wilmaa Time Machine (new: 7 days Replay TV ) was offered for the first time . Two years later, the Wilmaa Box followed, a set-top box for display on normal television sets. In the same year Thomas Gabathuler bought back the majority of the shares in Wilmaa AG from Goldbach Group.
Thanks to the partnership with SBB, Wilmaa is available on the SBB-Wifi homepage, which means that advertising-financed television can be watched free of charge at over 80 train stations in Switzerland. On the SBB Wifi start page, individual TV tips for the currently most popular TV programs are displayed for each station.
The Wilmaa Box is no longer supported since November 2019. In 2020, Wilmaa took over the customers of the streaming service TV Screen , which was founded in 2009 and which has been discontinued.
Today Wilmaa is one of the largest streaming services in Switzerland.
On June 18, 2020, the takeover of Wilmaa by Sunrise became known.

Four subscriptions are available. Wilmaa Free is the free offer that is financed through advertising when starting up and changing channels. It offers free live television viewing of over 260 television programs, including 60 hours of recording memory. Wilmaa Me, Wilmaa Me Plus and Wilmaa Friends & Family are the paid subscriptions. With all three paid subscriptions, customers receive all premium functions such as Replay TV as well as pause or rewind programs, 500 to 1500 hours of recording storage, unlimited downloads and the best picture quality with over 129 HD channels. With Wilmaa Me Plus and Wilmaa Friends & Family you also get 34 full HD channels. Owners of a Wilmaa Friends & Family account can share the offer with up to three friends or family members. The paid subscriptions are available for one or twelve months and can be canceled at any time. All offers are available on mobile, tablet, laptop, Android and Apple TV.

In 2013, Wilmaa Premium was named the best paid TV offer in Switzerland by the Swiss consumer magazine Kassensturz.
Technical
For licensing reasons, Wilmaa is only available in Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Whether the respective user is actually in Switzerland or Liechtenstein is determined on the basis of the IP address with the help of geotargeting . Wilmaa works with streaming .
