Teleboy is primarily a streaming provider for the transmission of television content over the Internet . It was developed by programmers in Zurich and is only available in Switzerland and Liechtenstein . After registration you can use the service for free.
Originally launched as a comprehensive electronic television program guide in 2002, Teleboy now offers not only live television in HD , online recording memory and replay TV (time-shifted television for the last seven days), but also Switzerland's first video-on-demand service for television series . With an average of 684,000 unique clients, Teleboy.ch is one of the online television portals with the greatest reach in Switzerland (WEMF certified NET-Metrix values).

In addition to the TV offer, Teleboy also offers the Wingo Mobile tariffs and, with Teleboy Home , Internet tariffs for interested Swiss customers for whom (according to their own information) the lines from Swisscom are used. The option of a fixed network flat rate for home tariffs is supplemented by a partnership with Netvoip .
E-cars
With Teleboy Drive , the company has been offering a flat rate for an electric car since the end of 2019. There is a choice between the Smart EQ fortwo (2-seater) and the Renault ZOE (5-seater). Teleboy does not want to miss out on a great advertising opportunity: those who agree to have the Teleboy logo on their car pay significantly less for the e-car subscription. So far, however, it seems to have only been possible to sign up for waiting lists for this business model on the homepage.
history
In 2002, Teleboy initially started as an internet-based program preview, with a focus on the distribution of EPG data, with an in-house editorial team being founded in 2008.
In 2010 Teleboy launched the first recording function in the field of Internet television, which was expanded to include live television. From then on, Teleboy users could watch TV online via live stream. A TV app for the iOS mobile operating system for iPhones was also launched.
According to the WEMF-Net-Metrix surveys, Teleboy overtook its competitors in January 2011, making it the online television portal with the greatest reach in Switzerland. The offer has been expanded with the Teleboy TV Plus paid subscription. An iPad app was developed in December 2011. In the same year an app for the Android mobile operating system was launched. First steps in the context of the emerging smart TVs were taken and an initial idea for a new product related to video-on-demand TV series took shape.
In 2012, the first replay function in Internet television was introduced in Switzerland and Liechtenstein, which made the entire television program of the last seven days available on demand. In addition, there was an integration of social media. This is a social plug-in for IPTV that enables users to watch TV with friends, comment on programs and chat, and share their favorite programs on Facebook and Twitter. The first TV app for Samsung Smart TVs was launched in Switzerland at the end of December .
In 2013, the first ten HD channels (for a fee) supplemented the existing 105 channels. The inclusion of further HD channels was planned for autumn 2014. In addition, Teleboy Serien will be launched in 2013, the first flat-rate offer in the on-demand TV series in Switzerland and Liechtenstein. An iOS & Android app has also been developed for the entire range.
Technical
General
Teleboy transmits television programs in real time via streams via Internet access and offers paying customers to download programs that have been recorded beforehand or up to 7 days afterwards, with the replay function active. For every station that is broadcast, Teleboy requires a license for a specific broadcast area. Therefore Teleboy is currently only available in Switzerland and Liechtenstein. The origin of the user is identified by means of the IP address , thus ensuring that the television program can only be viewed in the country that is licensed for it. The respective end device (PC, smartphone or tablet) receives the data streams via an internet connection, decodes them and sends an image and audio signal to the output unit. There is enough clear evidence that suggests that Teleboy has been using Zattoo's B2B service to distribute content since at least 2019 . The distinctive parameters of the stream URLs allow this conclusion. Zattoo has a corresponding B2B homepage with further information on their offer, which supports this theory.
Video-on-Demand (VoD)
When video-on-demand is transmitted, the stream is also sent via an Internet connection on request, but in contrast to television broadcasting, the user can dial into the corresponding content at any time and start playback at any time. The SVOD function enables the subscriber to start an unlimited number of streams and consume content within a certain period of time (monthly or annual subscription ).
Geoblocking
The Teleboy app is configured in the app stores in such a way that it is really only offered to users in Switzerland & Lichtenstein for download. In addition, a VPN & IP lock is active, which prevents content from leaving Teleboy if the users are not in Switzerland.

Teleboy does not use an external video player for the web player, but builds on its own system, like the majority of other video platforms. In contrast to Netflix and similar to YouTube , the video player can be freely selected if you do not like the automatic selection for the video quality. Above all for the high resolutions (720p & 1080p), at least two different transfer rates are available, which ultimately produce two different picture qualities.
Quality of the streams
The streams (recordings as well as the linear live stream), which were only available in a maximum quality of 720p ("HD ready") until the end of 2019, have been supplemented by streams in Full HD (1080p / 1080i) quality. This increase in quality affects the linear live streams as well as the downloads & streams of the recordings. You get the right to consume this quality if you own the new tariff introduced at the same time, Teleboy MAX . Also newly introduced with this subscription: the downloaded recording contains - in addition to the standard audio track ( AAC-LC at 128 kb / s) - the coveted Dolby (E-AC-3) sound quality with 6 audio channels and a data rate of 256 kb / s. The video codec used is the well-known AVC ( H.264 ), it is used at 1080p with a data rate of 8 MB / s. The 720p streams receive a data rate of 5 MB / s. The quality or the data transfer rate of the data streams can generally be compared well with that of the popular Netflix VoD service. When downloading a program, only 3 formats are always displayed to choose from: the highest, a medium and a low.
TV recordings, replay & tariffs
Teleboy allows you to record television content with a corresponding paid membership, currently there are 3 different tariffs. According to the company, 300 hours of recordings are allowed for the Teleboy Plus tariff , 1200 hours for the Comfort tariff and 1500 hours for the MAX tariff. Teleboy allows the programs to be downloaded if they are privately recorded programs. Only 3 qualities are offered here: low, medium & high. The actual resolution or bit rate (quality) of the file is not revealed before the download, but an estimated file size, which allows guesswork, can be viewed before the download. The selected selection for the quality setting can be saved globally, which makes a direct download easier, if the user so desires.
The 7-day replay function makes it possible to watch programs for up to 7 days after the TV broadcast and to move them to the private recording memory after the broadcast. The option to activate Replay appears when you subscribe to Teleboy for the first time.
Community TV recordings
Around the same time that 1080p was introduced, Teleboy introduced a community function that allows you to ask friends and rent their recordings. When using it for the first time, a community profile is created and you have the option of specifying a publicly displayed user name. You can see a catalog beforehand, from which you can find out which programs are available in the community. A noticeable feature of the new registration in the community is the option to automatically accept new friends , which does not exist in many portals with a social function. It speeds up or probably enables most shipments to be exchanged. Borrowed programs are only available to borrowers for streaming 24 hours a day; downloading is not possible. The program is automatically awarded if the friendship exists.
