The midfielder comes from the youth work of Everton , but never played a competitive game for the first team. After six loan deals with lower class English clubs in three and a half years, he moved to Oxford United in August 2015 . There he came in over 100 missions in two years and left the club in the summer of 2017 for Sheffield United , where he is under contract to this day. With Sheffield he rose to the Premier League in the 2018/19 season .

He is a former English U -Nationalspieler. For the Three Lions he played in U17 , U18 , U19 and U20 national teams.

Club career

Everton FC

In 2002, John Lundstram began playing football for Everton FC in his hometown of Liverpool . There he played in various junior selections and signed his first youth contract with the Toffees in July 2010 . Since then he has played for the reserve team and a year later he was given his first professional contract.

Loan transactions

On February 20, 2013 he moved to third division Doncaster Rovers on loan for a month , where he should collect match practice in the first team. He made his league debut on February 23 (34th matchday) in a 1-1 draw against Yeovil Town . The loan business was later extended to the end of the season, he was used in all 13 other league games of the 2012/13 season from the start and then returned to Everton.

After his return he played in the Premier League 2 for the B team, but was loaned to the second division Yeovil Town on November 28, 2013 . Two days later (17th matchday) he played his first game in a 3-0 away win against Watford FC . The next day he scored his first goal in a 1-0 home win against Blackpool FC . The loan, initially limited to January 2014, was extended to the end of the 2013/14 season at the turn of the year . Nevertheless, he was ordered back by Everton on March 10, 2014. Until then, he had been used in 14 league games for the relegation candidate, in which he was able to score two goals.

At the club from Merseyside , however, he did not make it into the first team and was awarded on March 27, 2014 for a month to third division Leyton Orient . Two days later he was in the starting line-up in the 1-0 home defeat to Bradford City . The loan was later extended until the end of the season and he played with the O’s in the promotion play-offs in May . In the final against Rotherham United he was substituted on for David Mooney in the 106th minute and converted his attempt on penalties . However, this hit was not enough and Leyton Orient lost. After that game and nine appearances, Lundstram returned to Everton.

On August 6, 2014, he switched to the second division club Blackpool on loan for the entire 2014/15 season . He made his debut on August 9 (1st matchday) in the 2-0 away defeat against Nottingham Forest . With the financially troubled club, he quickly established himself as an important regular player. The first win of the season could not be celebrated until matchday 11 with a 1-0 home win against Cardiff City . Everton called him back on January 3, 2015. By then he had been used in 17 league games in which he could only win seven points with Blackpool.

On January 9, 2015, he returned to Leyton Orient on loan. After initially playing four league games, he was left out in the next three and returned to his home club Everton on February 19. On March 19, Lundstram moved to third division Scunthorpe United for a month on loan . The loan business was later extended until the end of the season and he returned after seven missions.

Despite an offer, Lundstram did not extend his expiring contract and left the club on July 1, 2015 free of charge.

Oxford United

On August 13, 2015, John Lundstram moved to Oxford United in the fourth-rate Football League Two , where he signed a two-year deal with the option of another. He was previously associated with third division clubs Wigan Athletic and Crewe Alexandra . On August 18, 2015 (3rd matchday) he made his debut for the Yellows in a 3-1 home win against Notts County when he came on for Kemar Roofe in the 85th minute . In the next time he succeeded in stepping into the starting line-up of head coach Michael Appleton . On October 17, 2015 (13th matchday), he scored his first goal for his new employer against Leyton Orient. On December 26 (23rd matchday) he scored his second goal of the season in a 3-0 home win against Exeter City and prepared another goal. He ended the 2015/16 season with 37 league games, in which he was able to collect three goals and four assists, and helped his team to advance to Football League One .

In his second season in 2016/17 he took over the captaincy from the outgoing Jake Wright . His only goal of the season was on March 18, 2017 in a 2-1 home win in the league against Scunthorpe United. After his 35th season appearance, his contract was automatically extended for another year. This season he played 45 league games and was used in 12 other cup games.

Sheffield United

On July 25, 2017, Lundstram moved to championship promoted Sheffield United , where he signed a three-year deal. The transfer fee for the midfielder was around 560,000 euros. He made his debut on August 5 (1st matchday) in a 1-0 home win against Brentford FC when he came on for Samir Carruthers in the second half . On September 30 (11th matchday) he scored his first goal in the shirt of the Blades in the 1: 2 away defeat against Nottingham Forest . After a certain period of getting used to it, he became a regular player in November. The season 2017/18 ended Lundstram with three goals in 36 league games, thereby contributing significantly to the excellent 10th place in the standings of the team.

In the following season 2018/19 Sheffield United was able to improve and was involved in the promotion campaign from the start. Lundstram fell victim to the competition in midfield and slipped first from the starting XI and later from the rotation. Lunny mainly watched his club's games on the bench and in the stands. With ten league games, he had only a small share in the rise of the blades .

His status changed noticeably for the better in the next 2019/20 season . Head coach Chris Wilder used Lundstram in the first game of the season against AFC Bournemouth , which ended 1-1. A week later he scored the only goal of the day in the home game against Crystal Palace . With his first goal in the Premier League, he had now scored once in the top four divisions in England. In the he established himself again as a regular player and contributed not insignificantly to the surprising start of the season of the climber. On November 2 (11th matchday) he marked a brace in a 3-0 home win against Burnley FC .

National team

John Lundstram played international matches for the English U17 , U18 , U19 and U20 national teams.

With the English U17 national team, Lundstram took part in the U17 European Championship 2011 in Serbia and the U17 World Championship 2011 in Mexico . With the former, he made the leap into the team of the tournament.

In July 2012 he was with the U19 at the U19 European Championship 2012 in Estonia . There he scored his only goal in the tournament in a 2-1 victory in the group game against France.
