As a result of the mechanization of agriculture and the abandonment of small farms, the number of inhabitants has fallen to the current low since the middle of the 20th century.
economy
Agriculture, especially cattle breeding, traditionally plays the largest role in the economic life of the small mountain community. Income from tourism through the rental of holiday apartments (casas rurales) has increased in the last few decades.
history
In prehistoric grave mound ( tumulus ) and some Roman and Islamic coins of the community were found in the area, but these are no indications of a permanent settlement. On the contrary, the Islamic advance at the beginning of the 8th century led to a depopulation (depoblación) of the former Christian areas, which were only repopulated in the 11th and 12th centuries ( repoblación ) . In 1833 the place came from the province of Avila to the province of Salamanca.
Attractions
- The Tumulus El Turrión is one of the few of its kind that was built at such an altitude and far away from the coast. According to previous knowledge, it does not seem to belong to the megalithic culture, but to a later culture.
- The three-aisled parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Natividad preserves an altarpiece with Churrigueresque style elements from around 1700.
