The population decline since the 1950s is mainly due to the mechanization of agriculture , the abandonment of small farms and the associated loss of jobs.
economy
For centuries, the population lived on agriculture (especially cattle breeding) as a self-sufficient living ; Sotoserrano is considered the cradle of the Jamón Ibérico . Crafts and retail trade also played a certain role. Empty houses have been rented out as holiday homes (casas rurales) since the 1960s .
history
Small Iberian finds were made on the banks of the Río Alagón ; it is believed that the tribe of Vettones moved here. In Roman times the "Silver Road" ( Via de la Plata ) ran through the area; The Moors also advanced north on it in the 8th century. After the Christian reconquest ( reconquista ) , King Alfonso IX gave. from León the area of Soto de Francia in 1192 to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela .
Attractions
- The town center with its stone and half-timbered houses makes a simple, but tidy and pretty impression. The stone lintels of some houses have small coats of arms.
- A public fountain, also known as cattle trough (Abrevadero) or washing area (lavadero) served, dates back to the 1791st
- The parish church Señora de la Asunción is a three-aisled building from the 16th century. The interior with its artesonado ceiling supported by extremely slender columns almost gives the impression of a hall church . The altarpiece is dedicated to St. Consecrated to Ramón Nonato .
- A stone Santiago cross stands in front of the church .
Surroundings
- About three kilometers southeast of the town ( 40 ° 25 ′ 34 ″ N , 6 ° 0 ′ 54 ″ E ) a probably medieval " Roman bridge " (puente romano) crosses the Río Alagón.
Festivals
Spread over the year there are several - originally religiously motivated - festivals in honor of Christ, Mary, the Mother of God, and other saints; The town's patron saint is San Ramón Nonato , the founder of the Mercedarian Order.
