The Río Alagón is around 205 km long and is the longest tributary of the Tagus .

course

The Río Alagón has its source in the province of Salamanca in western Spain . On the upper and middle reaches it flows through very thinly populated areas of Castile . Behind Sotoserrano , it crosses the Las Batuecas-Sierra de Francia Natural Park in a narrow valley . At the middle course, the river is dammed in the Embalse de Gabriel y Galán (the Granadilla peninsula with the ghost town of the same name is almost enclosed by the reservoir ) and immediately afterwards it merges into the Embalse de Valdebispo . About 50 km before the mouth it flows past Coria , the only small town on its course. At Alcántara in the province of Extremadura it flows into the Tajo , where both rivers together form the reservoir of the Embalse de Alcántara .

Attractions

The city of Coria with its castle, its cathedral and the nearby bishop's palace (palacio episcopal) , its monasteries and convents and its central square is one of the most beautiful places ( conjunto histórico-artístico ) in Spain. At the village of Sotoserrano a Roman bridge crosses the river; it was part of the road network of Via de la Plata ("Silver Road").
