The significant population decline since the 1950s is essentially due to the mechanization of agriculture , the abandonment of small farms and the associated loss of jobs. The hamlet (pedanía) Villar de Flores , which has been abandoned since 2010, also belonged to the municipality .
economy
The fertile but stony soils in the area provided the basis for the cultivation of wheat and other crops for the inhabitants who, in earlier times, were mainly self-sufficient . Cattle breeding was also practiced to a large extent. Traders, craftsmen and service providers of all kinds gradually settled in the town itself. Today summer tourism plays a major economic role.
history
Bronze , Iron Age , Roman , Visigoth and even Moorish finds have not yet been made. The region was occupied towards the end of the 12th century by the Castilian - Leonese troops of Ferdinand II (r. 1157–1188) and Alfonso IX. (reg. 1188-1230) "recaptured" ( reconquista ) and successively from Christians from the north and refugees from Al-Andalus re repopulated or ( repoblación ) .
