Castellanos de Villiquera is a western Spanish city and one from the main village and several hamlets (Pedanías) existing municipality ( municipio ) with 617 inhabitants (at January 1, 2019) in the province of Salamanca in the autonomous community of Castile and Leon . Until 1985 the place was called La Mata de Armuña .

Location and climate

The place Castellanos de Villiquera is located in the Castilian plateau only about 13 km (driving distance) north of the provincial capital Salamanca at an altitude of about 825  m . The climate is temperate to warm; Rain (approx. 400 mm / year) falls mainly in the winter half-year.

The slight increase in population since the beginning of the 21st century is due to the planning and creation of new building districts close to the city of Salamanca.

For centuries, the population of the community lived on agriculture, which included cattle breeding, on a self-sufficient basis ; excess income could be sold in Salamanca. Craftsmen and small traders have settled in the village.

history

It is believed that the Celtic tribe of the Vettones settled here, but there are no traces of them, as well as of the Romans , Visigoths and even of the Moors who advanced north in the 8th century . After the final Christian reconquest ( reconquista ) around the year 1200 , King Alfonso IX. from León the area of ​​Castellanos free for repopulation ( repoblación ) - the place name is also reminiscent of this time, the first documentary mention of which comes from the 13th century.

Castellanos de Villiquera

The Iglesia de San Juan Bautista was built in the first half of the 16th century on the site of a previous medieval building; Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón is sometimes named as the architect . The entrance is on the south side, protected by a small porch ( portico ) . The interior of the church, about 10 m wide and just as high, has a single nave and is vaulted. The choir area including the transept was renewed in the 17th century. The baroque retable of the high altar contains some picture panels from the 16th century.

Surroundings

The church in the hamlet of Carbajosa de Armuña houses a late Baroque altarpiece (retablo) in the style of Churriguerism which is well worth seeing .
