Sobradillo is a northern Spanish municipality ( municipio ) in the province of Salamanca in the autonomous community of Castile and Leon .

location

Sobradillo is located in the west of the province of Salamanca directly on the border with Portugal at an altitude of about 650 meters above sea level. d. M. in the landscape of the Arribes del Duero Natural Park interspersed with granite rocks . The city of Salamanca is about 105 kilometers (driving distance) to the east; the historically significant and architecturally attractive city of Ciudad Rodrigo is about 54 kilometers southeast.

In the first half of the 20th century the town had a constant population of around 1000. As a result of job losses due to the mechanization of agriculture , the population has since fallen to its current low.

economy

Agriculture (agriculture, viticulture and cattle breeding) traditionally plays the largest role in the economic life of the municipality. Income from tourism in the form of renting out holiday homes ( casas rurales ) has increased over the last few decades.

history

After the largely bloodless recapture ( reconquista ) from the hands of the Moors and the repopulation ( repoblación ) of the almost deserted mountain region in the 11th and 12th centuries, the region near the border initially belonged to the dominion of the Leonese and Castilian kings; However, they handed the latter over to individual landlords ( señores ) around 1340 , who from then on took over the border security.

Attractions

  • The keep ( torre de homenaje ) dates from the 14th / 15th centuries. Century; of the castle ( castillo ) that once belonged to it , only the foundation walls are visible. The former entrance to the tower is about three meters high and could only be reached with the help of ladders. The medieval building with its crenellated wreath as well as four defensive cores and four round guard projections now serves as an information center for the Parque Natural de Arribes del Duero . A similar tower is in the neighboring town of San Felices de los Gallegos .
  • The parish church ( Iglesia de Santiago Apóstol ) with its two-fold recessed bell tower on the side of the west facade is a 16th century building with a small Renaissance portal . The elongated interior houses a baroque altarpiece .
  • The hermit chapel Ermita de la Misericordia has a covered porch. It receives light through four windows secured by turned stone pillars. In the square in front of it there are two stone crosses with an octagonal shaft.
  • A noteworthy spring house ( Fuente Romana ) from the 16th century on the outskirts.
  • Of the Convento de Santa Marina la Seca located outside the village ( 40 ° 54 ′ 13 ″  N , 6 ° 47 ′ 51 ″  W ) , only ruins with a baroque portal and a bell gable ( espadaña ) remain .
