For centuries, the population of the community lived on agriculture, which included cattle breeding, on a self-sufficient basis ; excess income could be sold in Salamanca. Craftsmen and small traders have settled in the village.
history
It is believed that the Celtic tribe of the Vettones settled here, but there are no traces of them, as well as of the Romans , Visigoths and even of the Moors who advanced north in the 8th century . After the final Christian reconquest ( reconquista ) around the year 1200 , King Alfonso IX. from León the area of Castellanos free for repopulation ( repoblación ) - the place name is also reminiscent of this time, the first documentary mention of which comes from the 13th century.
Attractions
The Iglesia de San Esteban was built in the first half of the 16th century on the site of a previous medieval building. The side bell tower (campanario) protrudes only a little over the roof of the church. In a niche with a shell over the generally richly designed Renaissance portal there is a statue of Our Lady ; hovering angels hold a cloth with the face of Christ. The triangular gable above almost seems to float above the portal. The interior of the church, about 13 m wide and just as high, has a single nave and is vaulted.
