Almendra is a northern Spanish municipality ( municipio ) in the province of Salamanca in the autonomous community of Castile and Leon .
location
Almendra is located in the northwest of the province of Salamanca at an altitude of about 760 meters above sea level. d. M. in the rocky landscape of the Arribes del Duero Natural Park near the Almendra Dam , which dams the Río Tormes . The provincial capital Salamanca is about 72 kilometers (driving distance) in a southeast direction.

In 1900 the place still had a good 650 inhabitants. As a result of job losses due to the mechanization of agriculture , the population has since fallen to its current low. The surge in the late 1960s and early 1970s is due to the temporary influx of workers and engineers during the construction of the dam.
economy
Agriculture traditionally plays the largest role in the municipality's economic life. Income from tourism in the form of renting out holiday homes ( casas rurales ) has increased over the last few decades.

Some smaller archaeological finds from the area indicate the presence of the Celtic tribe of the Vettons and the subsequent Romans.
Attractions
- The small parish church of the village has a bell gable ( espadaña ) in the west and an open south porch ( portico ).
- The main attraction in the vicinity of the village is the dam wall of the Almendra Dam, located on the border between the provinces of Salamanca and Zamora, about eight kilometers north of the village, which was built in the Franco era and completed in 1970. The dam is 202 meters high and 567 meters long. The dam has a maximum capacity of 2650 million cubic meters, making it one of the largest in Europe.
- The nearby quarry, from which the stone material for the on-site concrete mixing plant comes from, is also impressive .
