La Peña is a municipality ( municipio ) in northern Spain in the province of Salamanca in the autonomous community of Castile-Leon .
location
La Peña is located in the northwest of the province of Salamanca at an altitude of about 700 meters above sea level. d. M. in the rocky landscape of the Arribes del Duero Natural Park near the border with Portugal formed by the Duero River . The provincial capital Salamanca is about 90 kilometers (driving distance) in a southeast direction.

In 1900 the place had just under 450 inhabitants. As a result of job losses due to the mechanization of agriculture , the population has since fallen to its current low.
economy
Agriculture, especially the planting of vines , olive and fruit trees, traditionally plays the largest role in the municipality's economic life. Income from tourism in the form of renting out holiday homes ( casas rurales ) has increased over the last few decades.
Attractions
- The main attraction in the area around the village is an approximately 40 meter high granite or syenite rock ( Pena Gorda ), to which the place owes its name. The rock can be climbed; From above there are beautiful views over the cultivated areas surrounded by field stone walls and lined with old trees in the otherwise flat plateau in its vicinity.
