Castillejo de Martín Viejo is a small municipality ( municipio ) in western Spain in the province of Salamanca in the autonomous region of Castile and León .
location
Castillejo de Martín Viejo is located in the water-rich but rocky hilly landscape in western Spain along the border with Portugal . The town of Ciudad Rodrigo, which is well worth seeing, is about 15 kilometers to the southeast.

In the second half of the 19th century until 1960, the place always had around 1000 inhabitants.
economy
As a result of the stony and therefore difficult to work soil, the agricultural yields are low. Therefore, livestock and dairy farming play a bigger role in agriculture. As a result of the mechanization of agriculture , the town's population fell sharply in the second half of the 20th century.
history
Not much is known about the history of the small town. About two kilometers west along the Río Águeda are the rock carvings of Siega Verde, recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site . In Islamic times the area was depopulated. In the 11th and 12th centuries it was repopulated ( repoblación ) by immigrants from the Christian north, but also from the south of Spain, in the course of the reconquest of the former Christian areas ( reconquista ).

- The prehistoric drawings in the ravine of the Río Águeda are almost inaccessible.
