Fuentes de Oñoro is a municipality in the province of Salamanca in the autonomous community of Castile and León in Spain . Together with the Portuguese neighboring town of Vilar Formoso , the municipality is particularly known as a border town with Portugal .

Both the Pampilhosa - Guarda - Salamanca railway line ( Linha da Beira Alta on the Portuguese side ) and the E80 European road , which is partially developed as a motorway, pass through the city .

In 1811, a British-Portuguese army led by Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, defeated a French army led by Marshal André Masséna . This battle became known as the Battle of Fuentes de Oñoro .

One of the few known residents of Fuentes de Oñoro is the journalist and rancher Alfonso Navalón Grande .
