Seskli ( Greek Σεσκλί [ sɛˈskli ] ( n. Sg. )) Also Sesklia (Σεσκλία ( n. Pl. )) Is an uninhabited Greek island in the municipality of Symi in the South Aegean region .

location

The third largest island in the municipality is located one kilometer south of Symi. About 250 m west of Seskli is the island of Troubeto (Τρουμπέτο). The island of Kouloundros (Κούλουνδρος) forms the end of the Bay of Skomisa in the southeast. In the south, opposite the Strait of Rhodes is about 18 km from Rhodes .

history

Seskli has remains of settlements from the late Neolithic period. In ancient times the island was known as Teutlousa (Τευτλούσα). After their defeat at the Battle of Syme during the Peloponnesian War in 411 BC. Parts of the Athens armed forces are said to have sought refuge on the island.

Seskli is now a metochi of the Panormitis monastery and is no longer permanently inhabited. In the summer months there are swimming trips to the island from Rhodes and Symi.

The herpetofauna of Seskli includes the five species Blanus strauchi strauchi , Laudakia stellio daani , Anatololacerta oertzeni pelasgiana , the snake- eye lizard Ophisops elegans and Eirenis modestus semimaculatus . The existence of Dolichophis jugularis is suspected.

Together with the east side of Symi and other small islands is Sesklio in the Natura 2000 network of the European Union as GR 4210025 Anatolika Tmima nisou Symis & Nisides (Ανατολικό Τμήμα νήσου Σύμης & Νησίδες Κούλουνδρος-Σεσκλί-Τρουμπέτο-Μαρμαράς-Καραβαλονήσι-Μεγαλονήσι-Γιαλεσίνο -Οξεία-Χόνδρος-Πλάτη-Νίμος) integrated, and at the same time as European bird sanctuary or as IBA ( "Important bird area") -region GR 169 Nisos Simi kai gitonikes Nisides classified (Νήσος Σύμη και γειτονικές νησίδες).
