The Datça or Reşadiye Peninsula , formerly also known as the Dorian Peninsula or the Knidos Peninsula ( Greek: Χερσόνησος Κνιδία (Chersónisos Knidía); Latin: peninsula Cnidos ), is an 80 km long, narrow peninsula in the province of Muğla in the southwest of the Turkey . It separates the Gulf of Gökova (in the north) from the Gulf of Hisarönü . It is located west of the city of Marmaris and north of the islands of Rhodes and Symi . Nisyros is located in the western extension .

The north coast is flat, with extensive bays in which the Meltemi wind blows in summer . The south coast is rocky and rugged. Due to its natural beauty and its many bays and harbors, the peninsula is popular with private yachts and is on the route of many boat tours, which usually start in Bodrum or Marmaris .

The city of Datça , where most of the inhabitants of the peninsula live, is located in the middle. The ancient port city of Knidos is located on the western tip . There are a large number of holiday homes and other holiday resorts on the peninsula, which are mainly visited by Turkish holidaymakers. The European-style mass tourism typical of neighboring regions such as Marmaris or Bodrum has only started to a small extent on the Datca Peninsula, which is due to the long transfer route to Dalaman Airport, which international airports do not have year-round flights to. In addition, only a few of the large hotel complexes typical of the European market exist.

Names

Because of its settlement by Doric colonists from the Peloponnese , it was also called the Doric Peninsula.

The name Reşadiye honors the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed V. Reşad , but is rarely used today.
