On this island lies Cleopatra Beach, about which there are some legends related to Cleopatra and Antony . Ionic settlements have been identified in the area around Muğla, for which the name Kayra was previously common . The Dorians founded the two cities of Knidos and Halicarnassus , today's Bodrum . The city of Muğla was conquered by the Seljuks in the 12th century and passed to the Mentesche princes in the 15th century . From the 16th century it belonged to the Ottoman Empire .

Between 1986 and 2005, seven earthquakes above magnitude 5 were detected around the Gulf of Gökova by the Kabili Observatory of Istanbul University .
