Nimos ( Greek Νίμος ( f. Sg. )) Is the largest uninhabited Greek island in the municipality of Symi in the South Aegean region .

location

Nimos is located at the exit of the Doric Gulf (Κόλπος της Δωρίδος, also Gulf of Hisarönü , Turkish Hisarönü Körfezi ) and is separated from Symi in the southwest by a 150 m narrow strait. The distance to the coast of Asia Minor is about 9 km to the north and east and 14 km to the west. The coastline is very rugged in the north, the highest point reaching 363 m. The vegetation is sparse and is determined by the typical representatives of the Phrygana .

history

Traces of human settlement from the Neolithic Age (4th millennium BC) to the Mycenaean period (around 1600-1050 BC) have been found on Nimos . Tower -like structures, so-called Kastra (Κάστρα), exist from the Hellenistic period .

In 1971 the island was still inhabited by six shepherds. Today excursions from Symi to the beaches and the Church of Panagia tis Apokoui (Παναγία της Αποκουή) are offered during the summer months .
