Villarino de los Aires is a northwestern Spanish town and a municipality ( municipio ) with about 796 inhabitants (at January 1, 2019) in the province of Salamanca in the autonomous community of Castile and Leon . The hamlet of Cabeza de Framontanos also belongs to the municipality .

Location and climate

The place Villarino de los Aires is located in the extreme northwest of the province of Salamanca at an altitude of about 580 to 600  m in the barren and rocky landscape of the Arribes del Duero Natural Park near the border with Portugal formed by the Duero River . The neighboring town of Fermoselle, only about 10 km as the crow flies but about 23 km by car , is in the province of Zamora . The city of Ledesma is approx. 50 km (driving distance) in a south-easterly direction; the provincial capital Salamanca is a total of approx. 85 km away. The climate in winter is often harsh, but in summer it is mostly temperate and warm; Rain (approx. 585 mm / year) falls mainly in the winter half-year.

As a result of the mechanization of agriculture and the abandonment of small farms, the population has fallen to its current low since the middle of the 20th century.

economy

Agriculture, especially the planting of vines , olive and fruit trees, traditionally plays the largest role in the economic life of the small town; the community belongs to the Arribes wine-growing region . In 1970 the dam of the Almendra Dam located in the municipality was completed. In addition, the place functions to this day as a trade, craft and service center for the villages and hamlets in the region. Income from tourism in the form of renting out holiday homes (casas rurales) has increased over the last few decades.

history

After its reconquest ( reconquista ) from the hands of the Moors and the subsequent repopulation ( repoblación ), the place was a border town to the Kingdom of Portugal . It was temporarily taken by the Portuguese King Dionysius in 1296 . During the reign of the Castilian kings Alfonso XI. , Pedro I and Enrique II formed independent manors (señorios) and the small town was fortified; it experienced its heyday in the 15th and 16th centuries.

Attractions

  • The place has a pretty townscape with partly winding streets.
  • The two churches Iglesia de San Sebastián and Iglesia Santa María la Mayor date from the 15th and 16th centuries. Century.
  • The town hall (ayuntamiento) from the 18th century has a stepped gable and a three-arched portico on the ground floor.
  • Within a radius of about 500 m there are two viewpoints that can be reached on short hikes (Mirador de la Falla and Mirador del Duero ) with views of the Duero valley.
Surroundings
  • An approximately four-kilometer excursion leads to a Celtic fortress of Teso de San Cristóbal, which is surrounded by granite rocks . Archaeologists have reconstructed a stone wall here.
  • The confluence of the Río Tormes in the Río Duero is about 3 km northwest of the village. From here you can see the dam of the Bemposta dam, which is under Portuguese control .
  • The dam of the Almendra Dam is located about 15 km (driving distance) to the east.

Personalities

  • José Rico Martín (1915–1937), general and co-conspirator against Franco , was born in Villarino de los Aires.
  • José-Miguel Ullán (1944–2009), writer who lived in exile in France for a long time, was born in Villarino de los Aires.
