The Bemposta dam ( Portuguese Barragem de Bemposta , Spanish Presa de Bemposta ) is located in the northern region of Portugal in the Bragança district near the village of Bemposta . It dams the Douro , which forms the border with Spain here, to a reservoir (port. Albufeira de Bemposta , Spanish. Embalse de Bemposta ). The Tormes River flows into the Douro a little downstream from the dam . About 7 km east of the Bemposta dam is the Almendra dam , which dams the Tormes River.
The project to build the dam began in 1957. The construction was completed in 1964. The dam is used to generate electricity. It is owned by the Companhia Portuguesa de Produção de Electricidade (CPPE).
Barrier structure
The barrier structure is a weight arched concrete wall with a height of 87 m above the foundation level . The top of the wall lies at a height of 408 m above sea level . The length of the top of the wall is 297 m and its width 3.5 m. The volume of the structure is 316,000 m³.
The dam wall has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief with four gates, which are located in the middle of the dam wall. A maximum of 200 m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a maximum of 11,500 m³ / s via the flood discharge. The design flood is 11,000 m³ / s; the probability of this event occurring has been determined to be once every 1,000 years.
Reservoir
With a normal storage target of 402 m, the reservoir extends over an area of around 4.05 km² and holds 129 (or 128) million m³ of water - of which 20 million m³ can be used to generate electricity.
power plant
The Bemposta run-of-river power plant is one of the largest hydropower plants in Portugal with an installed capacity of 401 (or 431) MW . The average annual generation is 1,068 (or 1034 or 1,086) million kWh . It is used to cover medium and peak loads .
The power plant is owned by CPPE but operated by Energias de Portugal (EDP).
Bemposta I power plant
When the power plant was commissioned in 1964, two machines were initially installed, followed by another machine in 1965. The Francis turbines for these machines were supplied by Voest, while the generators were supplied by BBC . They are located in an underground machine house on the north side of the dam. The three turbines of the power plant each have a maximum output of 79.5 (or 70) MW and the generators 78 MVA . The nominal speed of the turbines is 150 / min. The nominal voltage of the generators is 15 kV . The average annual production of the three machines is 924.1 million kWh .
The minimum height of fall is 59 m, the maximum 71 m. The maximum flow is 152 m³ / s.
Bemposta II power plant
From January 2008 to December 2011 an additional machine with an output of 191 MW was installed. It is located in its own underground machine house, also on the north side. This machine should generate an average of 134 million kWh annually.
