The Crestuma-Lever power plant ( Portuguese Barragem de Crestuma-Lever ) is a run-of-river power plant on the Douro . It is located in the Northern Portugal region in the Porto District . The eponymous municipality of Crestuma is located approx. 1 km downstream, the city of Porto approx. 15 km downstream.

The project to build the power plant began in 1976. The construction was completed in 1985. In addition to generating electricity, the dam is also used to supply drinking water. It is owned by the Companhia Portuguesa de Produção de Electricidade (CPPE).

Barrier structure

The barrier structure is a concrete gravity dam with a height of 25.5 m above the foundation level . The top of the wall is at a height of 25.5 m above sea level . The length of the top of the wall is 470 m and its width 8.2 m. The volume of the structure is 205,000 m³.

The dam wall is divided into a lock on the left side of the river, followed by a machine house and a weir system with flood relief , consisting of 8 gates through which a maximum of 26,000 m³ / s can be discharged. The design flood is 26,000 m³ / s; the probability of this event occurring has been determined to be once in 1,000 years.

Reservoir

With a normal storage target of 13 m (maximum 21.5 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 12.98 km² and holds 110 (or 106) million m³ of water - 22.5 (or 16 or 19) million m³ are used.

power plant

The Crestuma-Lever power plant is one of the smaller hydropower plants in Portugal with an installed capacity of 108 (or 105 or 117) MW . The average annual generation is 366.9 (or 311, 360, 363 or 399) million kWh . It is used to cover medium and peak loads .

Both the Kaplan turbines and the generators were supplied by Sorefame . The three Kaplan turbines have a horizontal shaft (see Kaplan bulb turbine ). They each produce a maximum of 39 MW, while the generators produce 36.1  MVA . The nominal speed of the turbines is 83.3 / min. The generators have a nominal voltage of 6  kV . In the switchgear , the generator voltage is increased from 6 kV to 70 kV using power transformers.

The minimum height of fall is 6.8 m, the maximum 12.6 m. The maximum flow rate is 450 m³ / s per turbine.

The power plant is owned by the CPPE but operated by EDP .

lock

On the left side of the dam there is a lock that can accommodate ships with a length of 83 m, a width of 11.40 m and a draft of 3.80 m. (see also locks on the Douro )

Remarks

  1. APA and Global Energy Observatory give the height ( Height above foundation or Height of the Dam ) 65 m, but this is probably a mistake, given the height of the headwater of 13 m and the height of the wall crest of 25, 5 m.
