Others

The dam Castro ( Spanish Presa de Castro ) is a dam with hydroelectric power station in the municipality of Fonfría , province of Zamora , Spain . It dams the Duero into a reservoir. The dam is used to generate electricity. Construction began in 1946; it was completed in 1952 (or 1953). The dam is owned and operated by Iberdrola Generacion SA .

Barrier structure

The barrier structure is a concrete gravity dam with a height of 55 m above the foundation base . The top of the wall is at a height of 568.3 m above sea level . The length of the top of the wall is 144 m. The volume of the dam is 87,000 m³.

The dam wall has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 90 m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a maximum of 10,800 m³ / s via the flood discharge. The design flood is 7,000 m³ / s.

Reservoir

With the normal storage target of 564 m, the reservoir extends over an area of around 1.8 km² and holds 27 million m³ of water; 22.02 million m³ of this can be used to generate electricity.

power plant

The installed capacity of the power plant with two Francis turbines and one Kaplan turbine is 190 (or 196.9) MW . The first two machines with an output of 40 MW each went into operation in 1952; the second with an output of 110 MW in 1974 (or 1977). The machine house is on the right side of the river.

The drop height is 38 m for the turbines 1 and 2 and 38.4 m for the turbine 3. The maximum flow rate is 270 m³ / s for the turbines 1 and 2 and at 340 m³ / s for the turbine. 3
