The Miranda dam ( Portuguese Barragem de Miranda ) is a run-of-river power plant in Portugal on the Douro , which forms the border with Spain here. It is located in the north region in the Bragança district in the immediate vicinity of the town of Miranda do Douro .

The project to build the dam began in 1955. The construction was completed in 1961. The dam is used to generate electricity. It is owned by the Companhia Portuguesa de Produção de Electricidade (CPPE).

Barrier structure

The barrier structure is a concrete pillar dam with a height of 80 m above the foundation level . The top of the wall is at a height of 535 m above sea level . The length of the top of the wall is 263 m. The volume of the structure is 240,000 m³.

The dam wall has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief with four gates. A maximum of 11,000 m³ / s can be discharged via the flood relief. The design flood is 11,000 m³ / s; the probability of this event occurring has been determined to be once every 1,000 years.

Reservoir

With a normal storage target of 528.05 m (maximum 533 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 1.22 km² and holds 28.1 million m³ of water - of which 6.66 (or 6.4) can Million m³ are used to generate electricity.

power plant

With an installed capacity of 390 (or 369) MW, the Miranda power plant is one of the largest hydropower plants in Portugal. The average annual generation is 1,036.3 (or 879 or 897.8) million kWh . At the time of commissioning in 1960, the power plant had an installed capacity of 174 MW.

In 1960 three machines with a maximum of 67 (or 58 or 60) MW each were put into operation. You are in an underground machine house on the right (western) side of the dam. In 1995 an additional machine with an output of 189 MW was put into operation. It is located in its own underground machine house.

machinery

A total of four Francis turbines with different capacities are installed. The following table gives an overview:

machine Nominal speed (1 / min) Turbine (MW) Generator (MVA) Transformer (MVA)
1 150 58.84 60 3 x 23.8
2 150 58.84 60 3 x 23.8
3 150 58.84 60 3 x 23.8
4th 100 193 210 220

The generators have a nominal voltage of 15  kV . In the switchgear , which is located on the right-hand side of the river, the generator voltage is increased from 15 kV to 248 kV by means of power transformers.

The minimum height of fall is 51 m, the maximum 66 m for machines 1 to 3 (40 m or 60 m for machine 4). The maximum flow rate is 128 m³ / s for each of the turbines 1 to 3 (386 m³ / s for turbine 4).

The power plant is owned by the CPPE but operated by EDP .
