The Régua power plant ( Portuguese Barragem da Régua ) is a run-of-river power plant on the Douro . It is located in the Northern Portugal region in the Vila Real district . At this point the Douro forms the border between the districts of Vila Real and Viseu . The town of Peso da Régua is about four kilometers downstream from the dam .
The project to build the power plant began in 1965. It went into operation in 1973. The power plant is owned by Companhia Portuguesa de Produção de Electricidade (CPPE), but operated by Energias de Portugal (EDP).
Barrier structure
The barrier structure is a concrete gravity dam with a height of 41 (or 42) m above the foundation base . The top of the wall is at a height of 81 m above sea level . The length of the top of the wall is 350 (or 310) m and its width is 6 m. The volume of the structure is 108,000 m³.
The dam is divided into a machine house on the right side of the river and a weir system with the flood relief in the middle. There is a lock on the left bank of the river . A maximum of 21,500 m³ / s can be discharged via the flood relief, consisting of 5 gates. The dam also has a bottom outlet . The design flood is 21,500 m³ / s; the probability of this event occurring has been determined to be once every 1,000 years.
Reservoir
With a normal storage target of 73.5 m, the reservoir extends over an area of around 8.5 km² and holds 95 (or 91) million m³ of water - of which 12 (or 13) million m³ can be used to generate electricity.
power plant
With an installed capacity of 156 (or 180) MW, the Régua power plant is one of the medium-sized hydroelectric plants in Portugal. According to REN, the installed capacity at the time of commissioning in 1973 was 156 MW . The average annual generation is 738 (or 581.1, 620.8 or 682) million kWh . It is used to cover medium and peak loads .
The three Kaplan turbines were supplied by Kvaerner Turbin AB , the generators by BBC . The vertical shaft turbines have a maximum output of 58.84 (or 52) MW each, while the generators have 58 MVA . The rated speed of the turbines is 107.1 / min. The generators have a nominal voltage of 10 kV . In the switchgear , the generator voltage of 10 kV is increased to 240 kV by means of power transformers.
The minimum height of fall is 20 m, the maximum 27.5 m. The maximum flow rate is 316 m³ / s per turbine.
lock
On the left side of the dam there is a lock that can accommodate ships with a length of 83 m, a width of 11.40 m and a draft of 3.80 m. 28,000 m³ of water are required to lock a ship. (see also locks on the Douro )
