The Pocinho power plant ( Portuguese Barragem do Pocinho ) is a run-of-river power plant in the region of northern Portugal . It lies on the Douro , which at this point forms the border between the districts of Bragança and Guarda . About 200 m west of the dam is the eponymous place Pocinho and about four kilometers south is the town of Vila Nova de Foz Côa .

The project to build the power plant began in 1974. It went into operation in 1982 (or 1983). The power plant is owned by the Companhia Portuguesa de Produção de Electricidade (CPPE) and is also operated by CPPE.

Barrier structure

The barrier structure is a concrete gravity dam with a height of 49 m above the foundation level . The top of the wall is at a height of 139 m above sea level . The length of the top of the wall is 430 m and its width is 6.40 m. The volume of the structure is 120,000 m³.

The dam is divided into a machine house on the left side of the river, followed by a weir system and a lock on the right side. The weir system consists of 4 gates through which a maximum of 15,000 m³ / s can be discharged. The design flood is 15,100 m³ / s; the probability of this event occurring has been determined to be once every 1,000 years.

Reservoir

With the normal storage target of 125.5 m (maximum 134.5 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 8.29 km² and holds 83.07 (or 81) million m³ of water - of which 12.24 can (or 12) million m³ can be used to generate electricity.

power plant

With an installed capacity of 186 MW, the Pocinho power plant is one of the medium-sized hydropower plants in Portugal . The average annual generation is 534 (or 406.2, 408.4 or 530) million kWh . It is used to cover medium and peak loads .

The Kaplan turbines were supplied by Kvaerner Turbin AB and the generators by ABB . The three turbines each produce a maximum of 57.6 MW, while the generators produce 62  MVA . The nominal speed of the turbines is 88.2 / min. The generators have a nominal voltage of 10  kV . In the switchgear , the generator voltage of 10 kV is increased to 240 kV by means of power transformers.

The minimum height of fall is 15.5 m, the maximum 21.6 m. The maximum flow rate is 390 m³ / s per turbine.

lock

On the right side of the dam there is a lock that can accommodate ships with a length of 83 m, a width of 11.40 m and a draft of 3.80 m. (see also locks on the Douro )
